The Saga of Seven Suns is a series of seven space opera novels by American writer Kevin J. The books are set in a not-too-distant future where humans have colonized a number of other planets across the galaxy, thanks in part to technological assistance from an ancient alien race, the Ildirans.

I'm enjoying the 7 Suns series. I went in skeptical because of the not-so-nice things some people had to say about Anderson in his work on the Dune prequels. But I'm coming to see he got an unfair rap. The man really is an accomplished writer and a very entertaining story teller. Sure, Fire and Night is no deeply philosophical novel that deals with the complex interplay of religion, politics, and government. But it never aims to be. What it is, however, is an incredibly entertaining story that moves along quickly.

The extermination of Earth is at hand. With his increasingly irrational leadership Basil Wenceslas, chairman of the Hansa, has driven humanity into a corner. His punitive treatment of the Hansa colonies and the Roamers as well as his refusal to aid an embattled Theroc have made enemies for the people of Earth. Enemies that the Hansa cannot afford. Not when Wenceslas is struggling against revolt by soldier compies, who decimate the military by stealing ships and slaughtering soldiers; and betrayal by the Ildirans, led by Jora’h the Mage-Imperator, who is secretly scheming with the hydrogues to annihilate Earth.

Now disparate factions of humanity must plan for their own salvation. Worldtrees allied with humans on Theroc have rallied hulking, thorny tree battleships. Roamers work with powerful water entities, the wentals, to seed planets everywhere with a growing force to challenge the hydrogues.

But when the final battle with the hydrogues is joined, who will aid the people of Earth?

I would like to offer an overall review of all seven books combined. Even though each book has its own sub-plots, one has to read all seven to stitch every piece together. Unless you plan to read all of them (a major time commitment) I suggest that you go find yourself something shorter to read. This is an epic saga.

I find the books and the story hard to classify. It is science fiction, but what kind? The story starts as if it is going to be hard science fiction. (That's why I probably consider the first book to be the best.) But then it degenerates into several parallel threads, many of which are pure fantasies. By the end of the seventh book, I felt that 90% of the threads and plot were more appropriately described as fantasy than science fiction.

Even if you prefer fantasy over hard science fiction, you will still be disappointed by the repeated "deus ex machina" saving the day. I count seven such cases, three of them occurring in the last volume. Anderson is very good in weaving a complex story to its crescendo and creating a very tense (nearly hopeless) situation for the heroes. Then he cannot get them out of there in any plausible way, and he resorts to dues ex machina time after time. Because of that, you will feel disappointed (perhaps even cheated) once you finish the story, even if you will find it entertaining most of the way.

The characters are one-dimensional. There are good sub-plots of love, hatred, betrayal, revenge... The evil is really evil, and the good-guys could do no wrong. If you don't mind that, you may enjoy the saga.

I'm enjoying the 7 Suns series. I really am.

Anderson has managed to advance a large cast of characters without being bogged down in unnecesary exposition. His short chapter style seemed odd at first, but it really fits in excellently with the novel.

Sure, some of the plot is predictable. Take the surprise ending - don't worry, I won't tell what it is. One of the "surprises" was easily predictable, but still no less enjoyable. The other I never saw coming. If it weren't for the "book 6 coming in 2007" message near the front, I would've thought book 5 would be the end of the series. But with the conclusion, it's clear Anderson has much more to write. And I'm highly optimistic about his ability to keep the quality plot moving along, unlike many other epic writers, who begin to flounder after 5 or 6 books in a series. "Saga" is still going strong, and book 5 was an excellent addition. Highly recommended!

In a word "WOW". It's been forever since I read a book non-stop like this. If you are reading the review, I am sure you read the preceeding 4 volumes. Chances are you just finished and wondering what other people thought! I will tell you now... keep reading!

All the characters, all the plots, all the mysteries, all the questions are all perfectly intertwined and unravelled in this book. Well, save for a few, which leads into the 6th book.

Honestly, I thought it was going to all end here, but it does continue. And continue it does. In a way that will keep me faithfully waiting for #6.

But, damn... what a satisfying book. Other series of this length that I've read usually tend to drag on... with multiple pages on details of what a blade of grass looks like. But this book keeps the pace going non-stop. A true feat considering the borderline-multiple plot line.

Wow.

Well I finished this book in 2 days. I am absolutely loving this saga by Kevin J Anderson. Highly recommend this saga.

I have loved this entire series. Space operas and sagas are fascinating to me and KJA is one of the best in this area! There's plenty of action, which I love, but the characters are very believable. Not once did I say in my mind, "oh, yeah, right." The plot is well developed by this 5th installment and the author simply continues to tighten the noose with increased tension and heartbreaking moments. I recommend the book as well as the series highly.

This is definitely more fantasy than hard science fiction. The story is interesting but science is glossed over on most occasions. Each chapter begins with exposition, making the novel read like the old serialized ones of yore. I enjoyed that aspect but I can see how that might be annoying.

I love whole saga,I couldn't keep away from books. I can not wait to start next series, which is kind of sequel from Saga of Seven Suns.
I can't get enough of this wonderful story and the amazing worlds that Kevin Anderson has created! I haven't read this much in a long time and it is so good to be back among the written word.
