I was a bit worried re-reading Larry Niven's and Steven Barnes' "Dream Park. I initially read the book way back when it was release around 30 years ago and really like it. Because of the nature of the book, I was very worried that the advances in online gaming and computers over the intervening three decades would have made the book seem silly.

All characters in this book are fictitious. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental. First Ace printing : April 1981. Published simultaneously in Canada.

Larry Niven is also known in science fiction fandom for "Niven's Law": "There is no cause so right that one cannot find a fool following i. Over the course of his career Niven has added to this first law a list of Niven's Laws which he describes as "how the Universe works" as far as he can tell. Larry Niven at the Internet Book List.

A group of pretend adventurers suit up for a campaign called The South Seas Treasure Game. The One That Started it All. Published by Thriftbooks. com User, 16 years ago. When I was a young'n, I discovered "Dream Park" and was utterly enthralled. Gaming was, at the time, in its infancy. Video games consisted of Missile Attack, PacMan and Centipede. The world was at the brink of the first major technological revolution since the sixties and the possibilities were endless.

I was a bit worried re-reading Larry Niven's and Steven Barnes' "Dream Park." I initially read the book way back when it was release around 30 years ago and really like it. Because of the nature of the book, I was very worried that the advances in online gaming and computers over the intervening three decades would have made the book seem silly. Thankfully, that's not the case. The story has actually weathered the time fairly well. Oh, there are some small things that Niven and Barnes missed the boat on. But, really, the biggest fault I can find with the book is the prevalence of the, um, er,... "intimate" behavior in it. I don't know if that's a relic of the 80s or if it's a function of the "real-world" gaming mindset. But, after a while, it just struck me as pretty adolescent. Anyway, the book is well-written, well-described and engrossing. I rate it (even after all these years) at a Very Good 4 stars out of 5.

The books in the "Dream Park" series are:

1. Dream Park
2. The Barsoom Project (Dream Park)
3. The California Voodoo Game: A Dreampark Novel (Dream Park)
4. The Moon Maze Game (Dream Park)

Dream Park is thrilling and frustrating at the same time. It's vision of virtual reality and LARPing predates both concepts in the forms as we now know them by about 4 years and the cargo cult magic system that forms the foundation of the game world still remains original. However the book's murder mystery is half-baked at best and an unfortunate air of 80's misogyny taints the entire story. Still, some of the book's concepts still inspire me (as a VR experience creator and former Imagineer) even to this day.
Love Me
This is a book I read for the first time many, many years ago. I was then in the grip of a Dungeons & Dragons obsession and it really appealed to me. All these years later, I've worn out my old paperback and was happy to find a good hardcover. The book still holds up as a fun adventure with enough twists to keep one turning the pages.
It is a rollicking adventure along the lines of a D&D game (which, I suspect, was the source of the story...or an attempt to capture that feeling anyway) and isn't short on surprise. It's a fun, fast paced read and I recommend it.

I read this at the recommendation of a friend. He'd read this as a teenager and was curious how it would hold up after all of these years. Well I can safely say that it still reads well. Some of it feels as if the authors has not made up their minds about the tone. But the ideas were fun and interesting, the primary character was engaging, and the secondary characters were appealing (although some of the gamers were not always distinct). I thought the "twist" was made pretty obvious early on -- I was wondering why it took the lead so long to puzzle it out (I guess he was distracted). I might try some of the other books, but I'm not sure how this could work as a series. But this was definitely worth a read!

Kids raised on video games may not appreciate this book as they should, but, for those of us who played fantasy games in the 60s and 70s, this book is pretty cool. The slightly disconnected logic and willingness to believe the unreal is typical of gaming, so this book fits right in. And it's a nice little murder mystery too! The book is a little slodgy in places, but the resolution is satisfying. I wouldn't mind visiting Dream Park.

Sci-fy with Fantasy in my opinion. Entertainment of Virtual Dungeons and Dragons. However a real mystery is afoot and the head of security must blend in with a group of cosplalyers to find the person responsible. Hear they are making a movie of this book. Would love to see it.

A favorite read and especially touched my nerdy side and the part of me that loved role-playing games and wished that there was LARP (live action role play) back then. I still have a hope back there in my brain that one of the mega entertainment/amusement corporations would build something like this especially with "E-Sports" picking up in popularity. Live RPG with holograms would be fantastic. Almost as fantastic as the way Larry Niven's words helped me see this world in my head, as a good story should.
Niven and Barnes create a wonderful world in Dream Park; a theme park where adults get to live out their fantasy adventures and role-play in the extreme. Set in a near-future where full-scale motion holography is not only possible, but indistinguishable from reality, Dream Park engages you in the characters within the fantasy game and who they are in their normal lives. It's fantasy, thriller, and murder mystery all in one.

Read it when it first came out. Liked it then, like it now. A good, fast-paced read, as Niven's work usually is, and the collaboration of Niven and Barnes makes this a truly enthralling novel.
