There's a secret in the basement of the engineering building. Well this book was definately something a little different for David Drake.

There's a secret in the basement of the engineering building.

Every time more of the black-and-mottled creatures made the nearby brush thrash, Selve raised his gun with a convulsed expression on his face. Astor’s hand kept him from firing. Though the creatures. repeatedly passed in view, despite the close cover, they invariably split to either side of the tree against which the party had backed. The huge spike of that trunk was visible at a distance, and the stampeding animals were prepared even in their panic to avoid it. Keyliss also had her weapon raised. She held its butt an inch away from her shoulder, however, as if to disassociate.

This is list of works by American military science fiction and fantasy writer David Drake. Armageddon (1986)-with Billie Sue Mosiman. A Century of Horror 1970–1979: The Greatest Stories of the Decade (1987)-with Martin H. Greenberg. Space Gladiators (1989). A Separate Star: A Science Fiction Tribute to Rudyard Kipling (1989)-with Sandra Miesel. Heads to the Storm (1989)-with Sandra Miesel. Space Infantry (1989)-with Martin H. The Eternal City (1989).

Science Fiction & Fantasy Writer. BRIDGEHEAD was my first attempt to write what I think of as mainstream SF: a novel about a scientific experiment without any tanks or legions or swordsmen or spies. Hammer’s Slammers Series. The genesis of the plot was a friend telling me about a non-sanctioned Psi experiment that was once run in the basement of the Engineering Building at Duke University. It went badly wrong, leading to the retirement of the department head. The novel was part of my first three-book contract, back in 1982. I’d written The Dragon Lord on spec, and I’d done the additional wordage for Hammer’s Slammers for Jim Baen at Ace.

Christopher Lehmann-Haupt, The New York Times. The Great Bridge is a great book. This is the definitive book on the event. The book is covering an exciting time in America when large engineering projects were being accomplished which would lay an infrastructure which made the 20th century economy possible. He covers other bridge builders and their projects notably the Eads bridge over the Mississippi. As a lot of people know the Roebling family sacrifices made the Brooklyn bridge possible.

There's a secret in the basement of the engineering building. Three travelers, claiming to be from a utopia six thousand years hence, are helping Dr. Gustafson and his graduate staff invent a time transport. Their stated goal: to stop war and secure a peaceful future. Overloaded and overtaxed, the transport experiments start to go wrong. Dreadfully wrong. What the professors don't know is that the Travelers have their own plans for the machine. And ...

Halfway through and nothing has happened. Lots of technical detail for atmosphere that uses up time and pages without advancing the story or adding to the reader's understanding of what's happening. I was never very good at keeping track of characters that come and go without much development; especially true in this book. I've liked a lot of Drake's more recent, lightweight, stories where people talk less and do more.

I like most of Drake's books, but he wrote this before perfecting his style, and it was not very memorable. Fine if you are stuck on a plane, but not in the same class as Redliners or Forlorn hope.
