McIntyre's writing captures the spirit of the original series, both in terms of story and tone, but she makes many plot decisions that either ignore or significantly alter the established canon from the original series and the existing films at the time of her writing.

Enterprise: The First Adventure. This book is about the first time Kirk takes command of the Enterprise. Star Trek: The Original Series). by. Vonda N. McIntyre. Spock misses Captain Pike, Sulu wishes he were on a different ship, Scotty downright hates him, and Janice Rand is a timid young thing who is not only illegally underaged but also so traumatized by her past as a slave on some planet that she practically faints every time Kirk asks her to do something.

Real World article(written from a Production point of view). Now, the untold story – Captain Kirk's First Mission! Enterprise: The First Adventure is a Pocket TOS novel written by Vonda N. Published by Pocket Books, it was first released in September 1986, and outlines the first mission undertaken by James T. Kirk as Captain of the USS Enterprise. From the book jacket.

It's a shame this book, the first 'giant' Star Trek novel about a big event in Star Trek history came out so substandard. Damian, Jun 11, 2019.

This is what I remember thinking was originally behind the weird subplot in the novel, "Enterprise: The First Adventure", when it first came out for the 20th anniversary of TOS, where Vonda McIntyre has Rand (and her brother) being on a vessel that had suffered a time slip and therefore they did not match their chronological ages/physical appearances. It's a shame this book, the first 'giant' Star Trek novel about a big event in Star Trek history came out so substandard.

Vonda N. McIntyre was born in Louisville, Kentucky, the daughter of H. Neel and Vonda B. Keith McIntyre. She also wrote a number of Star Trek and Star Wars novels, including Enterprise: The First Adventure and The Entropy Effect

Vonda N. She spent her early childhood on the east coast of the United States and in The Hague, Netherlands, before her family settled in Seattle in the early 1960s. She earned a BS with honors in biology from the University of Washington in 1970. That same year, she attended the Clarion Writers Workshop. She also wrote a number of Star Trek and Star Wars novels, including Enterprise: The First Adventure and The Entropy Effect.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. carousel previous carousel next. Long before the 2010 reboot movie, and long before William Shatner's own take on Kirk and Spock's first meeting in the 2009 novel Star Trek: The Academy - Collision Course, was Vonda McIntyre's Star Trek Enterprise: The First Adventure written in 1986. First of all, it's very well written.

STAR TREK: TOS - Enterprise, The First Adventure. Of Mist, and Grass, and Sand. This isn't true now and it wasn't true then, so I changed it back.

Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, Dr. McCoy, and the rest of the crew of the "Enterprise" embark on their first mission together

In this novel, we get to see some of the background of the cast of characters that would go on to play roles in TOS. A lot of this background is interesting, and we get to know quite a lot about the characters. The plot of the novel, however, is lacking. In the novel, the Enterprise makes first contact with a strange, new species. But the Enterprise's real mission--that of ferrying around some entertainers to various starbases--is just plain silly. Furthermore, the book is extremely long, and, at times, moves at a glacial pace.

In short, if you're very curious about the background of the TOS characters, this might be a decent read. But if you're expecting an interesting plot beyond that, you are likely to be disappointed.

Great story about first adventure

Here is the first mission of James Kirk as Captain of the Enterprise, and with all the possible plots, the writer chooses this bland and slow narrative.

I was greatly disappointed with this book. The pacing is absolutely ponderous! There is very little drama, as the first 200 pages are all set-up for the conclusion.

This is nothing more than pulp fiction.

Save your time and money.

The book and story are well written. HOWEVER, the book is short on accurate facts. At one time the Enterprise is called a Constellation class ship. In the Original series episode, the second one "Where No Man Has Gone Before", Sulu is in the Astrophysics dept,. The CMO is Mark Piper. In the First Adventure, Sulu is the helmsman right from the start. Mark Piper retired earlier and McCoy is the CMO. In my opinion, while the story was alright, the facts being so far off hurt the overall story so much I didn't really want to continue reading.

Vonda McIntyre's "Star Trek- Enterprise: The First Adventure" proposes a hypothetical first mission for Captain James T. Kirk and the crew of the Starship Enterprise following Captain Christopher Pike's promotion to Commodore. McIntyre's writing captures the spirit of the original series, both in terms of story and tone, but she makes many plot decisions that either ignore or significantly alter the established canon from the original series and the existing films at the time of her writing. Examples of these changes include the backstory between Kirk and Gary Mitchell (previously explored in "Where No Man Has Gone Before", the second "Star Trek" pilot), the inclusion of a young Ensign Pavel Chekov on Kirk's first mission (Chekov first appeared in "Amok Time," during the second season of the original series), and Spock's cousin, Stephen, a "pervert" who seeks out emotional experiences (foreshadowing Spock's brother Sybok, who first appeared three years later in "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier"). Additionally, as Pocket Books published this prior to the beginning of "Star Trek: The Next Generation", McIntyre was left to invent her own version of Klingon society, in which the empress is a figurehead in a society controlled by oligarchs. Anyone familiar with the rest of the franchise will find these elements jarring. Even though this long predates J.J. Abrams' 2009 reboot of these characters, McIntyre's Kirk reads more like a performance by Chris Pine than a young William Shatner. With that said, the story may entertain casual readers or those able to keep in mind its date of publication.

One of my all-time favorite stories set in the world of Star Trek. Bought it so I could share it with my kids. Time for them to become third-generation Trekkies.
