Home Robert A. Heinlein To Sail Beyond the Sunset. But it is a wonderful way to start To Sail Beyond the Sunset, the autobiography of Maureen Johnson, the mother of that most infamous Heinlein character, Lazarus Long.

Home Robert A. As we would expect in a Heinlein novel, straightforward plot description barely scratches the surface. Maureen Johnson is not only Lazarus Long’s mother but also eventually his wife, and perhaps his daughter as well; the twists of time and universes are full of paradox.

To Sail Beyond the Sunset is a science fiction novel by American writer Robert A. Heinlein, published in 1987. It was the last novel published before his death in 1988. The title is taken from the poem Ulysses, by Alfred Lord Tennyson. The stanza of which it is a part, quoted by a character in the novel, is as follows:.

Robert A. Heinlein To Sail Beyond The Sunset Come, my friends, Tis not too late to seek a newer world. The sounding furrows; for my purpose holds. To sail beyond the sunset, and the baths.

Heinlein’s books were among the first works of science fiction to reach bestseller status in both hardcover and paperback. he continued to work into his eighties, and his work never ceased to amaze, to entertain, and to generate controversy. WHAT happened to Heinlein in his later years? This book amplifies his previous (and accurate IMHO) criticism of the corruptions and perversions of late 20th century culture, while continuing to wax rhapsodic over INCEST? Was it drugs? Honestly, I'd have given this final book only one star, but for his retention of his ability to wrote witty dialogue, and his ongoing love for cats.

But, George, George, it must not happen! The Paradise plant must be shut down, yes; it is terribly dangerous, it is built wrong -like a steam engine without a relief valve. and it was built wrong - like a steam engine without a relief valve.

Come, my friends, Tis not too late to seek a newer world. Chapter 1 - The Committee for Aesthetic Deletions. I woke up in bed with a man and a cat. The man was a stranger; the cat was not. I closed my eyes and tried to pull myself together - hook ‘now' to mp memory of last night.

I like the perspective and the thought process of a story through this characters eyes. Beyond that, it's just filling out cultural observation and making a (usually right on) judgements and observations on societal trends. Because RAH has by the time of this book already created the nearly unstoppable time travel and event modification 'team' in the background, it's nearly impossible to be overly anxious for the character since the escape hatch is always open. If you get past the fairly constant background theme of free love with just about anyone you get at least a bit of perspective of what relationships unrestrained by societal mores might be, if people could be that actually moral and heathy enough to live that way.

A wonderfully strange and unique adventure through time and space. This book is full of Mr. Robert A Heinlein's charm, humor, and provocative social commentaries on the uniqueness of humanity and the moral paradoxes that are a part of everyday life. I really love the main character, Maureen Johnson Long who is a woman that is not afraid to express herself sexually as a woman and who adapts to changing circumstances with humor and courage. Fans of Doctor Who will love this book because it deals with time travel, immortality, and some very unique time settings. It does have some things in it that may be objectionable to some sensitive readers, but this is an adult oriented science fiction novel, and it is for mature adults, and that's why i loved this novel. If you like unique, eccentric, thought provoking science fiction with some mature humor along the way , you will really love this novel.

This is one of my favorite books, I've read it several times and still enjoy it every time. Heinlein wrapped up loose ends from "Time Enough for Love" with Lazarus Long's visit to his mother at the beginning of WWI; he also manages to maintain a "feminine" voice for his heroine (many male writers can't achieve that) and also adapts her phrasing and thought process to the decade as we follow her through the 100 years of her life. I do not want to spoil the end so I will not write anything about the plot itself.

This book mostly consists of Maureen Johnson Smith Long recording her autobiography while imprisoned and likely to be executed, if not rescued in time. The only one who knows of her circumstance is her cat, Pixel, the cat who walks through walls. Her biography was interesting and the end of the book set the reader up for another book about another relative of Lazarus Long (Woodrow Wilson Smith), which was probably never written.

If the reader has not read any of this series, he/she might prefer starting with "Methuselah's Children", "Time Enough for Love" and "The Cat Who Walks Through Walls" for background. I have not read the last of the three. Also, a character frequently referred to in this novel is a major character in "Stranger in a Strange Land" and "Number of the Beast".

But he almost loses that one for the Coventry Raid chapter. Surely he must have known at SOME time in his life that the Luftwaffe bombing of British cities took place at night, and that Me-109 and Spitfires were both DAY fighters, incapable of combat once daylight was extinguished.

It's a classic! This is my second or third time reading it. I grew up reading Heinlein.

I bought this for my husband who is a long-time fan of Heinlein. He loves it.
Loved it! Going to need to get more Heinlein stuff. Couldn't put it down. Named my cat, Pixel. Good stuff.
