now there was a magician's lair! Of course, I had since discovered most of what he had was unnecessary for the actual working of magik itself. I was beginning to see what Aahz meant when he said I'd have to learn to put on a show.

This book describes three intellectual revolutions that led to the current scientific consensus, emphasizing how science over the centuries has undermined traditional, religious worldviews. The author begins in ancient Greece, where the first revolution took place. Beginning in the sixth-century BCE, a series of innovative thinkers rejected the mythology of their culture and turned to rational analysis and the empirical study of reality.

This book is dedicated to Laurie Oshrin and Judith Sampson. A modern day student-teacher team who unwittingly guaranteed the myth-adventures of Aahz and Skeeve would continue to be written!

Robert Asprin wrote his first novel, The Cold Cash War, which was an expansion of one of his early short stories with the same title. It was published in 1977. It’s a science fiction novel set in a dystopian future where a corporation known as Zaibatsu competes from the economic to the military. Two of his books were on the New York Times Best Seller list that aroused the interest of his fans and the IRS. However, he could able to write any novels for the time period of seven years.

The only thing wrong with that is you tried to leave Gleep behind, who cost us money, instead of Buttercup, who didn't cost us anything! That doesn't ring true if you're trying to show a profit with the least possible effort. Um, you know how I feel about that stupid dragon-" Aahz began.

Loved this series since I first read them in High School & college. Funny, quick witted, fast paced just as I remembered. Huge number of typos in the text. I have hard copies at home that don't have those errors. I bought Kindle versions for convenience while traveling. Don't know what happened in the change from hard copy to e-reader friendly version. I give an "F" to whoever was in charge of that work. Never seen a changeover that sloppy. Since a lot of the fun in these books are puns & double entendras those mistakes were jarring and annoying. Felt like they used a a machine to scan the books into electronic copy and then either didn't QC the product or hired someone who didn't give a hoot. Ignore that and you're in for a fun ride throughout the series.

These books are as much fun to read now as they were when they were first published.

Having said that, I am extremely disappointed in the e-book version. Obviously nobody bothered to read the finished product prior to sell. There are so many typos it's ridiculous. I could forgive the occasional "Spell check thinks it is a word", but too many are of the fumble fingers type that does not spell anything. (Trust me I do understand how easy those are to make, I must have made 10 myself just in this review. But, unlike the publishers, I glanced at my typing before submitting.)

Myth-Conceptions (1980) is the second Fantasy novel in the Myth series, following Another Fine Myth. In the previous volume, Quigley gave Buttercup to Skeeve. Isstvan took Tananda, Quigley, Higgins, Brockhurst and Frumple to another dimension with a sabotaged D-hopper. Aahz remained behind to mentor Skeeve.

In this novel, Skeeve is now the apprentice of Aahz. Of course, Aahz doesn't have any powers at the moment, but he does know his stuff.

Aahz is a green scaly creature with four inch pointed teeth from the dimension of Perv. He had been a master magician, but lost his magical powers due to a practical joke by Garkin. Now he has Skeeve as his apprentice.

Tananda is a Trollop, a native of the Trollia dimension. Tanda is also green, but a lighter shade than Aahz and much prettier. She is an Assassin and has certain powers of her own.

Brockhurst is an Imp from the Imper dimension. He had been working for Isstvan, but now he is unemployable after that fiasco.

Ajax is an Archer from the Archiah dimension. He is very old, but still exceedingly proficient with his bow and arrows.

Gus is a Gargoyle. He has been working at a Yellow Crescent Inn and is ready to move elsewhere. So is Berfert, his salamander friend.

The Gremlin does not exist, according to common belief. Yet he is blue and moves quickly.

Hugh Badaxe is the Commander of the Royal Armies of Possiltum. He has a mean temper.

J. R. Grimble is the Chancellor of Possiltum. He is a bean counter, always looking for a way to save money. Naturally, he does not get along well with Badaxe.

Gleep is a young dragon, only about ten feet long. He had eaten part of Skeeve's sleeve in the Bazaar and is now attached to him.

Buttercup was Quigley's war unicorn. Now he belongs to Skeeve.

In this story, an army messenger brings an invitation to Skeeve to apply for the position of Court Magician of Possiltum. Skeeve doesn't think that he knows enough for such a position. Aahz soon convinces him that the job is a sinecure.

When they arrive at the castle, Skeeve and Aahz position themselves at the front gates and wait to be noticed. A guard advances toward them and Skeeve levitates his spear. The guard tells them that the hiring is being done at the back of the castle.

So Skeeve, Aahz, Gleep, Buttercup and the spear go around back and join the line of applicants. Skeeve and Aahz observe the fierce competition between Badaxe and Grimble. Then Skeeve notices that Badaxe in looking at the spear.

Badaxe calls them over and asks if the spear belongs to one of his guards. When told that such is the case, Badaxe gets angry. But Grimble is pleased that Skeeve is finally there.

So Skeeve is hired and then learns that a huge army is approaching Possiltum. The King expects them to prevent this army from invading Possiltum. After Aahz negotiates a salary for Skeeve, they head north to reconnoiter the enemy forces.

Skeeve and Aahz find that the opposing forces are even greater than expected. Then Tanda appears and they go to the Bazaar to hire some mercenary troops. Aahz leaves Skeeve with Tanda and goes off to talk to someone he knows. Tanda leaves Skeeve and Gleep to buy a few supplies for the job.

Tanda tells Skeeve to wait in the Yellow Crescent Inn. He cautiously enters the place and approaches the counter. Then the stone gargoyle asks for his order.

Brockhurst notices Skeeve and takes him back to a table. When he finds that Skeeve is hiring men, Brockhurst asks for a job. Skeeve tells him that Aahz has the money and may have hired others, but he will consider Brockhurst if Aahz is unsuccessful.

Ajax overhears this conversations and also asks for a job. Gus also requests a job for himself and Berwert. Then Aahz comes back without any troops and Skeeve finds himself hiring an Imp, an Archer, a gargoyle and a salamander.

This tale puts Skeeve and his friends in confrontation with the largest army ever seen on Klah. The defenders only have Skeeve's magic and a few other surprises. Then Skeeve meets Big Julie.

Winning this war requires the skills of all within Skeeve's group. The next installment is Myth Directions. Read and enjoy!

Highly recommended for Asprin fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of simple magic, subtle (and not so subtle) humor, and young magicians.

I read this series when I was a kid, I loved it then and I still enjoy rereading the books. The story is easy, quick and funny. the jokes continue to entertain me even now. It is enjoyable for all ages. There are only two things you should be aware of. One, that the series has not been entirely republished in kindle format. And two, that they are a bit pricey for such small books, especially since in other formats the books sold as omnibuses with three in the series per book. Worth buying if only to have as a quick, easy light read to brighten up a day.

This series is hands down my favorite to read. Robert Asprin is a wonderfully talented author and his books just drag you in. It's got magic and humor, mixed with emotion and vengeance. I love it

I will always love Robert Asprin. I read his books as a kid and return to them often for a nice, easy read. I think Asprin hits his groove better in the third book as his writing and character development improves but this is still an enjoyable book. Would definitely recommend to someone who was looking for some lighthearted fantasy.
Great book
