For seven hundred years, the Undying High Lord Milo has been building his Confederation, leading the Horseclans slowly across the lands once known as the United States, absorbing city-states and nomadic tribes alike, some by peaceful means, some by the sword. Now, led by an ancient and evil intelligence, his enemies have united and a wave of unstoppable destruction is thundering swiftly down on the Confederation forces.

Horseclans is a science fiction series by American writer Robert Adams, set in a North America that had been thrown back to a medieval level by a full-scale nuclear war. The books mainly concern the doings of the "Horseclans", a nomadic people originating from the "Sea of Grass"-the Great Plains from present-day southern Canada to central Texas, and from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains,.

Swords of the Horseclans. Author: Robert Adams. Genre: Military science fiction. Read a fragment illustrations. Behind them, an oncoming dustcloud heralded the advance of their army; before them, across the width of the river, the empty road wound into the dark density of a forest, beyond which rose the mountains that sheltered their foe, King Zenos of Karaleenos. Leading the column, astride a tall black stallion of the Middle Kingdoms’ breed, was a flashily attired man of uncertain age but of obvious Ehleenoee antecedents. His three-quarter armor was plated with gold, silver, and burnished copper, and his lobsterback helmet bore a nodding crest of bright red plumes.

Book in the Horseclans Series). Taking place after a nuclear apocalypse, the swords of the horseclans is a continuation of the story of the High Lord Milo and his horseclans. He and his allies have to face an army comming from the south and face the evil Witchmen (20th century scienctists) once again. The story is a little bloodthirty and is not for the timid. If you get a hold of these books I highly recommend that you read them. Be warned there are a lot more books in this series.

The 1976 follow-up to The Coming of the Horseclans continues the story of the nearly immortal Milo and Mara as they face new challenges in a post-apocalyptic world. Having secured an empire along what was once the Carolinas, Milo is waging a war of expansion in the south. After discovering that a enemy further to the south (hinted at to be the Florida area) has massed a huge army, Milo must band together with his former opponents and wage a war of attrition against this new threat - a threat lead by a centuries old witch with ties the ancient pre-apocalyptic technologists. Meanwhile, Mara manages the political situation back in the Karoleenos (Carolinas) capital city and encounters the child of a long lost love.

While the 2nd Horseclans book is still packed with action, it goes considerably further than the first in developing the characters and begins to expand on (what I assume) what will be story lines in future books. It also reveals more of the socio-political climate in a territorial area ranging from modern day Pittsburgh down to southern Florida, opening up the world of the Horseclans. Unlike the first book, which to me felt like one disjointed battle scene after another, Swords of the Horseclans goes further in setting up the "why" and explaining who's fighting who, and for what reason. What Swords of the Horseclans lacks in bloodthirsty violence (although there is still plenty of that), it makes up for in plot development.

Like it's predecessor, Swords of the Horseclans is total escapist science-fantasy. No Isaac Asimov or Tolkien here, but it's good for what it is.

Liked them back in the day still like them, but they need a series number you can see on your Kindle, 18 books hard to remember the reading order, and if I remember right I liked books 3 and 4 a lot more than one and two so 4 stars instead of 5.

Hey Amazon you out there, series like the Horseclans novels need numbers viable on your Kindle both at the Kindle Store and in your library once you've purchased them. Please!

The books are a great read. Unfortunately, the publisher did not employ a proofreader. Typos on every page. Very distracting.

I read this when i was a kid and even 25 years later it is still great and keeps you on edge. There are a few minor problems when the books were moved to Kindle - some of the words were scanned/copied/typed wrong. But, you can pretty much guess what they are and it really doesn't hurt the reader! Loved it.

I first read these books when I was 10 or so and in some ways they influenced my worldview... lol... rereading these novels 30 something years later and I still find myself enjoying myself.... Up Harzburk!

Now if they will only release the rest of the series on Kindle...i will truly be content.

The first six books in this series are fairly decent installments of this series, after that it drifts off topic. There is some of it already here, but mostly the author stays in the one time frame which helps a lot. The entire thing is fighting, gore, blood and guts, torture, and excitement - but he at least has a relevant focus for the plot and tries to maintain that focus. I am ok with the blood and fighting - it can be a nice change from other sorts of novels - but there is only so much I want without a decent plot to back it up and characters that are interesting.
Still, even at this point it is obvious he is seriously homophobic, which in his time was not as much of an issue as it would be now. However, for someone who obviously dislikes male on male (or female on female) sex, he sure does spend a lot of time talking about how horrible it is. Technically, his character is against pedophilia, but the author fails to distinguish between the two actions.
Not to mention that his main character keeps mentioning how much he regrets that he had to shape his people into living as they do since he feels bad about all the killing, just about the time he kills someone or praises someone for managing to do the one thing that would keep him from having to kill them…
I really wish someone would take this story idea and write it well, because I love the idea as a whole – too bad this writer didn’t manage to follow through.

I re-read this story from a long time back. It was just as good now as it was then. My only dislike was the mis spelling of a lot of words. It was annoying, but I would still recommend it as good reading for anyone wanting to just have fun reading and getting lost in the tell
This was an interesting read and kept my attention totally. I am looking forward to the rest of the series.
