CHAPTER ONE "Lest the hunter become the hunted. BRION HALDANE, King of Gwynedd, Prince of Meara, and Lord of the Purple March, reined in his horse sharply at the top of the hill and scanned the horizon. He was not a big man, though regal bearing and a catlike grace had convinced many a would-be adversary that he was. But his enemies rarely had time to notice this technicality. Dark, lean, with just a trace of grey beginning to show at his temples, in the precise black beard, he commanded instant respect by his mere presence in a room

You know the experience of going back to something you loved as an adolescent and discovering it to be completely execrable garbage?

Fortunately, that's not the case with Deryni Rising.

It's not without flaws, however. One reviewer gives it a one star review for the absolute good / absolute evil characters, and I can't dispute the criticism. Nuance of motive is not, at least in this first volume, in Kurtz' repertoire.

In fact, breaking things down stylistically, there is a lot to be disappointed in with this novel, so it is a testament to the power of her narrative that it is, in fact, a real page turner.

Kelson Haldane's father, the King, is killed in the prologue, and the subsequent novel covers the days to Kelson's coronation. Surrounded by treachery, ignorance, and general political scheming, there's a lot that can go wrong. It doesn't help that Kelson's most trusted advisor, Alaric Morgan, is a half-breed member of an almost-outlawed race with magic powers, and that virtually everyone is working on Morgan's downfall. This includes Kelson's mother, who is the most viciously anti-Deryni activist in the book. And, of course there is a usurper in the wings, herself a full Deryni sorceress, sowing discord and preparing for the restoration of a Deryni evil empire.

Reading this you can see influences into both Harry Potter and Game of Thrones.

Kurtz' style improves over the course of subsequent books: this is not just a first novel, it is a first novel sold-before-written, dashed off in a time when the bar for quality fiction in fantasy was non-existent.

Some things to gloss over: one dimensional characters. Frustrating and willful ignorance. Characters consistently jumping to untenable conclusions. Deus ex Machina solutions. Over-the-top descriptions (everyone is apparently astoundingly good looking in this world).

Some things to notice: great descriptions of ecclesiastical protocol. Beautiful descriptions of clothing. Gradual revelation of deeper mystery.

And yet, it is immensely readable. Gripping. Fun. And sets the stage very well for the books that follow.

The first of Kurtz' Deryni series. I can't believe I first read this back when I was in high school in the 70's. The setting is loosely based on 12th century England/Wales/Scotland. The main storyline only covers a couple of days, chronicling the events that lead up to the young Kelson's coronation as King of Gwynedd under the threat of the Pretender, Deryni sorceress Charissa from deposed House of Festil. It sets up events that continue in "Deryni Checkmate, "High Deryni" and the later Camber of Culdi books and History of King Kelson series.

This book was the first one Kurtz wrote nearly 40 years ago, and there are moments when the book does reflect that. There is usage of "magical" terminology and actions (like poetic spells) that aren't used in her subsequently written books.

Plot: The young heir to the kingdom of Gwynedd (an alternate universe equivalent to Britain, essentially), Prince Kelson, watches helplessly as his father dies of an apparent heart attack during a hunting expedition. In short order a rival heir to Kelson's throne (from a usurping dynasty who'd ruled Gwynedd centuries earlier) threatens his life and those of the rest of his family, the Church (and Kelson's mother) want his father's best friend killed because of his magical heritage, and Kelson comes to realize some surprising things about his own heritage.

This book and its two sequels in this trilogy (Deryni Checkmate and Deryni Rising) were both re-released a few years ago with some minor edits and plot adjustments to reflect later-written books.

I've loved this book since I was a boy. I first read it around 75 and, granted, my 9yo tastes don't always match up with my 47yo tastes. But in this instance, it does. I've read and reread the Deryni trilogies every few years throughout the past 4 decades.

King Kelson Cinhil Rhys Anthony Haldane was one of my boyhood heroes and I still have a very warm place in my heart for him. I do like him better in The Histories of King Kelson, the later series. He's a little less perfect there so I'm less given to hero worship when he's portrayed as a very capable young man with but still flawed.

Deryni Rising is a fairly early example of historical fantasy and Kurtz did a good job building a fairly complex world for her characters to work in with the political and religious tensions needed to make it feel balanced and 'real'. Quite a lot happens in this slim book - especially given that the book covers about a 24-hour period.

The magical system is a mix of ritual, religion, rhymes and psychic power. I'm glad that she dropped the rhymes after this book, but they do make the climactic battle between Kelson and his nemesis Clarissa a lot of fun.

Overall, I think I will continue reading this book and series for years to come and it definitely qualifies as one of my favorite comfort reads.

Was Just OK, but I don't feel called to read the rest of the series. Just as another reviewer has said, I got this book because Kurtz had been compared to Katharine Kerr and the Deverry Series. The depth, breadth and universe of Deverry far exceeds that of the world of the Deryni. I was hard pressed to even finish this book, but with much skimming did get through it.

According to the Forward, this was Kurtz first book not just in the series but first published book. So perhaps later books are better fleshed out as she matured as an author?

The only reason this is a classic is because it was written during the infancy of the genre. Not so bad that I stopped reading it but couldn't wait to be done so I could move on to something better. Every single chapter "Hero is terrified that there is no way out of the situation but then suddenly remembers about magical thing that was never mentioned before that will save everything". Maybe her later works are better but unless you are in middle school just getting into fantasy try reading Robin Hobb or someone else.
