I loved this book. The action was fast paced, with shorter chapters, which really keeps you on the edge of your seat. I also liked that each chapter focused on one main characters' viewpoint, which was listed in the Table of Contents. This makes things easier to read and helps to keep the readers mind on track, much as Martin does in his Song of Ice And Fire series.

I've heard this is the beginning of a 6 book series, and that makes sense, because this book is a lot of setup. In a good way, though - I love fantasy novels, in particular the world-building aspect of epic series, and this one did not disappoint. Original, novel races (besides human, no elves and dwarves here), mysterious keepers of knowledge, danger and intrigue, the whole bit, are all in these pages. I read through this one as fast as I could to see what was going to happen to the main characters (whom were so well developed that I began to care about their plight), and it was worth it! Things were left such that I can not wait to read the next one!

Farmers & Merchants has a nice blend of characters that are believable and enticing. I had the opportunity to attend a couple of Drake's seminars at Origins 2012 where I was first introduced to the characters in this book. My first thought of Klain was one of skepticism when he was briefly discussed during one of the seminars. I did not know if I could be drawn into the book with a character who was an animal. I decided to give this book a shot after witnessing the passion Drake displayed when he talked about his characters and the world they lived in.

After reading the first chapter, preconceived idea of Klain as a talking animal was shattered and I realized that in fact, Kain is an interesting and riveting character, one that I was cheering for during the Coliseum scene. Not only does Drake have an interesting character in Kain, he does a wonderful job of drawing the reader into the lives and minds of not only the other characters, but the world of Talic'Nauth as well.

I am eagerly awaiting the third installment as I immediately purchased the second and just recently finished that one as well. I do want to give you a word of caution, unless you are a speed reader, plan on a few nights of very limited sleep because this book does cause you to not want to put it down. I found myself saying just one more chapter!

I bought this because I met the author at a book fair and was intrigued by his conception of a fantasy novel and Brandon Sanderson just could not produce books fast enough. Well I read the first half a long time ago and recently returned to the book to have a diversion. I found that it was a very engaging and intricate plot that allowed me to get into the story. The prose appears to be from a new author. The dialogue is not always subtle, and there is a significant amount of foreshadowing in the book which took away slightly from the suspense. I say these things to be honest, yet it was still a very enjoyable book and it was a nice diversion. I have purchased the second book and look forward to reading that as well.

I have just finished reading book one of the Genesis of Oblivion Saga and i have to say that i am very much impressed by the writing of Maxwell Alexander Drake. At first I thought it was going to be a little difficult getting into the book but after a few pages i started feeling more and more involved with the book. Drake breathes new life into the fantasy genre with this first book.

Don't be shocked when i say that this book feels real. Unexpected things happen and characters die. You start feeling strongly for some characters and suddenly they are gone. In a fantasy world with magic and swords all around this is expected to happen and i feel all to often authors tend to shy away from this and it was wonderful to have the feel of danger in this book. You just did not know what was going to happen to whom. The one thing that I do regret with this book is that it seems to easy for people to get healed. A character is either ripped apart and is dead or just stabbed and beaten and healed later on but that is only a very minor complaint.

The magic system or essence in this book seems really thought out and made sense as I was reading. I learned more about it as the characters learned more and that really helped make this book feel right. The characters grow, those who live that is, and you can tell that they mature by their actions.

The only other gripe that i have about this book besides the healing aspect is traveling and time. I haven't figured out what bothers me about it but there just seems to be something lacking with it but again this is a very small detail.

Farmers & Mercenaries is awesome. The characters are all cool, and for the most part they avoid the stereotypes. I really found all the plot lines enjoyable. In some books there is one annoying plot, and when you start that chapter you are looking forward to see when it ends. This book doesn't have that, all the characters are great. It is only the first part in what is going to be 6 books (i think) and the book really sets up the next five books so you will be eager for answers. In a way it is a bit of a cliff hanger. It definitely leaves you wanting more, and I have already started on the second book.

On the down side, there seems to be a lot of language issues. He often says "insure" instead of "ensure". He also says "drug" instead of "dragged" hahahaha, there are a few other funny words like that. Anyway, on the plus side, the book also adopts a few words in the local language that really seem to add to the atmosphere and make it enjoyable.

I am pretty confident giving this book 5 stars. It really is good.
