Water Resources and Irrigation Engineering Lectures & Notes for Civil Engineers Water Resource Engineering is a specific kind of civil engineering that involves the design of new systems and equipment that help manage human water resources. Some of the areas Water Resource Engineers touch on are water treatment facilities, underground wells, and natural springs.

Irrigation is the application of controlled amounts of water to plants at needed intervals. Irrigation helps to grow agricultural crops, maintain landscapes, and revegetate disturbed soils in dry areas and during periods of less than average rainfall. Irrigation also has other uses in crop production, including frost protection, suppressing weed growth in grain fields and preventing soil consolidation. In contrast, agriculture that relies only on direct rainfall is referred to as rain-fed.

Sustainable planning and management of water resources. Introduction Shallow groundwater is a resource which can provides and meets high values of plant’s water requirement. Shallow groundwater use by plant depends on different factors as: soil hydraulic conductivity, plant root features and characteristics, salinity tolerance level, a proper drainage system, irrigation system and management View.

Water resources engineering is the quantitative study of the hydrologic . Civil engineers play a vital role in the optimal planning, design and operation of water resource systems.

Surface runoff is measured as the difference between precipitation and abstractions, such as infiltration (which replenishes groundwater flow), surface storage and evaporation. Hydroelectric-power development, water supply, irrigation and navigation are some familiar applications of water resources engineering involving the utilization of water for beneficial purposes.

Accordingly, the book Irrigation Engineering has now been retitled as Irrigation and Water Resources Engineering. Waterlogging and salinity damaged large areas. Moreover, the return in terms of increased agricultural production was far below the expectations. It is hoped that the book, in its present form, will be more useful to the undergraduate students of Civil Engineering (and also, to some extent, graduate students of Water Resources Engineering as well), and the practicing engineers dealing with water resources. The author would like to sincerely appreciate the efforts of the learned authors as well as the publishers of the referenced literature.

Peter Waller trained as an irrigation engineer at the University of California at Davis. He then spent two years working as an irrigation sales engineer in California and Washington State. Since then he has taught both undergraduate and graduate courses in irrigation engineering, drainage engineering, hydraulics, hydrology, hydraulic structures, and soil and water resources engineering to all levels of students at the University of Arizona, USA, Addis Ababa Institute of Technology, and Arba Minch University, Ethiopia. He has published numerous articles in various scholarly journals and authored several book chapters in civil engineering and irrigation.
