A wide range of fascinating World War II archive photographs depicts the operations, aircraft, and men of the Luftwaffe. They are shown throughout the successes and glory of the first three years at war and then in the final years, as they were forced to relinquish the territory they had fought to gain and retreat towards their homeland. This collection covers important campaigns such as the Battle of Britain and the devastating Blitzkrieg offensive, as well as the ingenuity and courage shown so that they could never be discounted from Allied calculations.

Price presents what would have been Top Secret intelligence during the war; from the Table of Contents:
-High Command- unit hierarchy, location on a map of Europe
-Flying Units- Staffel> Gruppe> Geschwader, the differing roles of each (fighter, bomber, divebomber, ground attack, transport, recon); their numbers
-The Fighter Force- tactics, concentrating on complexity of night fighting Helle-vs-Dunkel, Wildboar-vs-Tameboar
-The Bomber Force- Horizontal and Dive bombing tactics, the first London Blitz and the little Blitz later, anti-shipping tactics
-Airborne Assault Operations- parachute, glider, direct delivery (at some cost of the carrier aircraft)
-Pilot Training- 'The period of training given to new pilots was steadily shortened during the course of the Second World War...' (p. 60) Prior to 1942, fighter pilots received 150-200 hrs + 20 operational training, after 1944 about 92 hrs & 20 OT. The schools closed after Sept. 1944.
-The Flak Arm- 'Compared to other nations, the Germans were lavish in their deployment of anti-aircraft artillery; at the outbreak of the war the Luftwaffe had nearly a million men, or almost two-thirds of its manpower, serving in its Flak arm; during the course of the war their numbers gradually increased until at the peak, in the autumn of 1944, about 1,250,000 men and women- about half the Luftwaffe personnel- were so employed.' (p. 65) Price even shows the percentages of Regular servicemen, teens, women, & POWs at the Southern Germany installations. Good pictures of Flak batteries.
-The Fieseler 103 Flying Bomb- the 'Buzzbombs' required crews and support facilities; each is described.
-Personnel Biographies- The major figures.
Appendices- decorations, ranks, aircraft markings and numbering.
This is a useful research tool for modelers, historians and those tracing people who served. See also: Luftwaffe: Birth, Life and Death of an Air Force,The Last Year Of The Luftwaffe: May 1944-May 1945 (Greenhill Military Paperbacks).
