Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM) is the basic theory of fracture, which was originally developed by Griffith (1921, 1924) and modified by Irwin (1957). Linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) can be studied by either the near-tip stress field or the energy method. In the near-tip stress field approach discussed in Chapter 3, crack growth is determined by the local stress field around the crack tip, which is characterized by the stress intensity factor. Fracture occurs when the stress intensity factor reaches its critical value, that is, the fracture toughness.

The boundary element methodology is applied to the fracture mechanics of non-linear viscoelastic solids. The adopted non-linear model is based on the ‘free volume’ concept, which is introduced into the relaxation moduli entering the linear viscoelastic relations through a time shift depending on the volumetric strain.
