26 September at 07:35 way while I was teaching a series of masterclasses with seven exceptional young cellists at Schloss Neuhardenberg. As a tribute to Bylsma’s incredible life and musicianship, I asked my young colleagues to listen to Bylsma’s recordings and to play one movement of Bach in a beautiful room flooded with sunlight. Their performances are a wonderful testament to Bylsma’s legacy, showing everyone how much we loved Bylsma and how inspired we are by his life and music.

Still working at 69, not because I have to, but it is fun and rewarding. My wife and I run a company now 25 years in business, providing drug and alcohol testing services throughout the United States for government entities and employers.

My father, Jon Vogler, who has died aged 77, used his skills as an engineer to set up the UK’s first large-scale recycling system. When the collection of waste became unviable due to fluctuations in commodity prices, Wastesaver changed tack to deal with clothes and textiles. In 1974, when recycling at home was virtually unknown in Britain, Jon designed a household scheme in West Yorkshire for Oxfam called Wastesaver. Wastesaver still operates today, from a huge warehouse in Batley, West Yorkshire, where many of the clothes donated to Oxfam shops and clothing banks are sorted and recycled.
