Cromwell’s answer was to establish a full-time and professional fighting force, which would become known as the New Model Army. This initially consisted of around 20,000 men split into 11 regiments. Firstly, it worked on a meritocratic system, where the best soldiers were the officers. Perhaps the most tangible influence of the New Model Army, however, was its impact on the way England fought. At the end of the Interregnum, with the return of the monarchy, the New Model Army was disbanded.

The New Model Army of England was formed in 1645 by the Parliamentarians in the English Civil War, and was disbanded in 1660 after the Restoration. It differed from other armies in the series of civil wars referred to as the Wars of the Three Kingdoms in that it was intended as an army liable for service anywhere in the country (including in Scotland and Ireland), rather than being tied to a single area or garrison. Its soldiers became full-time professionals, rather than part-time militia

Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658) came from an impoverished East Anglian gentry family. Cavalry of the New Model Army, c1645.

Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658) came from an impoverished East Anglian gentry family. He was a small landowner and Member of Parliament (1628-29 and 1640-42). In February 1644, Cromwell was appointed cavalry commander of the Army of the Eastern Association, a Parliamentarian force recruited mostly in East Anglia. In July that year, this army formed part of the Parliamentarian forces at the Battle of Marston Moor, in which Cromwell commanded the cavalry of the left wing. The discipline of his troopers enabled them to deliver a decisive charge at the end of the battle.

The New Model Army was formally established on 6 January 1645. Oliver Cromwells soldiers were formed up and trained and actually PAID as a proper Regular Army. it was for this reason called the New Model Army. Takeing the one Militia group in the entire country, Cromwell expanded it, trained it, and recruited for it.

New Model Army, army formed in February 1645 that won the English Civil War for Parliament and itself came to exercise important political power. Toward the end of 1644 a dispute about the conduct of the war developed between Henry Montagu, earl of Manchester, one of the main parliamentary generals, and his lieutenant general, Oliver Cromwell. In December Cromwell argued in a major speech that the war would never be brought to a conclusion unless Parliament’s military resources were improved.

In May 1645 the New Model Army approached Oxford with the aim of laying siege to the King's headquarters. Did this happen? Sir Thomas Fairfax abandoned the Siege of Oxford. The battle of Naseby was fought on the foggy morning of 14th June 1645 and is considered one of the most important battles in the English Civil War. After almost three years of fighting, the 14,000 strong Parliamentarian New Model Army took on the Royalist army of King Charles I comprising less than 9,000 men, in what would to be the final key battle of the war. How the west was won:. What did the New Model Army do after they won the Battle of Naseby?

Only 2 left! Book Format: Paperback. A superb overview of military aspects of the New Model Army in particular and armies in the English civil war in general. Unfairly, in my view, the book has had far less attention than it deserves. woofgrrr, December 20, 2007.

Cromwell’s War Machine: The New Model Army 1645-1660 The New Model Army was one of the most formidable fighting forces ever assembled.

Cromwell’s War Machine: The New Model Army 1645-1660. What emerges is a very fine work indeed. The New Model Army was one of the most formidable fighting forces ever assembled. Taking his evidence from contemporary sources, Ian Gentles describes its formation under Thomas Fairfax and Oliver Cromwell, their innovative tactics, the course of its decisive victories over the forces of Charles I, and its ferociously successful campaigns against the Scots and the Irish.
