Book by Layman, R. McLaughlin, Stephen

Book by Layman, R. McLaughlin, Stephen. I had not considered aircraft carrying submarines to be examples of hybrid warships, but upon examination and thought it makes a world of sense - being on the surface for any sort of extended period as crewmen are trying to erect or dismantle an airplane is a rather foolhardy idea, and the possibility of the hanger flooding and sinking the submarine (such as happened. with HMS M2) could never be ignored. A very enjoyable book on what some have referred to as the "lunatic fringe" of naval construction. One person found this helpful.

The aircraft were found to suffer from wave damage during rough weather, often forcing the ship to return to port. During World War II Gotland sighted the German battleship Bismarck when it broke out of the Baltic Sea. The sighting was reported to Swedish Navy headquarters but the message was intercepted by the British embassy, which triggered the Battle of the Denmark Strait and the allied chase of the great battleship. HSwMS Gotland was converted in 1944 to an anti-aircraft cruiser due to a lack of modern seaplanes.

One of the siren songs of Naval Warship design is the Hybrid Warship - what one may call the "all singing, all dancing, does everything" kind of ship. Layman looks back over the years and reviews all sorts of projects which try to do two things at once. I have seen many of these already, but others were new to me. Layman shows what would have been the problems for those projects that remained only on paper, and lays out the problems for those that became reality.

Mssrs. McGlaughlin and Laymam write an excellent history of the mixed breed of warship known as the hybrid. They cover designs from before the First World War to modern designs combining missiles and VTOL aircraft. In particular they reveal the difficulty of making a ship capable of carrying and launching a sufficient number of aircraft while at the same time possessing adequate protection and surface firepower. The German vessels designed after the Graf Zepplin were huge ships of over 70,000 tons but carried only 42 aircraft with 6-11/54.5 cal. guns. They were immensely protected but were completely unrealistic as weapons of naval warfare. The Japanese built several classes of cruiser and converted battleships which could be described as hybrid and proved useful although the floatplanes they carried could be vastly outperformed by carrier aircraft. The French, British and Italians also had designs for hybrids. The Russians were going to contract the U.S. to build huge battleship-carriers for them but Congress refused to allow this. Overall, this book is fascinating reading and a must read for any ship modeler, naval historial or naval wargamer.

This is an excellent review of hybrid warships from the early 20th century to the 1980s. It highlights the difficulties in combining an ability to handle aircraft with any other useful military attributes. It suggests that the desire to design or build such ships is a sign of some psychological defect. If you are interested in a detailed study of the interaction between technical characteristics and military utility in warships, then this book is for you.
