ordered new book and got used.
This is a beautiful, heavy book. This isn't one of those books that have many ugly, tiny, black and white pictures with only few full-page, full-colour ones. I read this prior to my second trip to Rome, hoping for learn some new insights into the astonishingly abundant works of art in that city. I did learn a lot new things, but there seems to be some disconnect between the art represented and the art the text refers to, with long paragraphs devoted to works not reproduced in the book. I found it uncomfortable to flip back and forth looking for the image of an art work, without knowing whether it was a few pages back or ahead, or not at all! Little numbers in parentheses pointing the reader to the right page would have been much appreciated! Plus a reference without a page number could have meant there was no reproduction in the book. At some point I was reading with my laptop next to me and a search engine at the ready, looking for images, which was of course, too slow to do at every seating.

The chapters, written by different experts, are of varying degrees of usefulness. While in some of them the authors clearly want to be instructive, establish connections and provide perspectives, others obviously wrote their pieces without knowing which works were to be reproduced in the book, or fully unaware that most readers aren't already familiar with half the works produced at a specific point in the whole of Rome, Tuscany or Venice. Some of the chapters are painful to read, and the authors clearly care more about showing how much they know than about providing a clear overview of Roman art.

Finally, and this is something I feel about much art literature in general, much space is devoted to when and how long an artist was actually in a place, and how good the evidence is, and other points like that, not directly related to why a specific work is important or valuable.

If you want to learn about Roman art, this can't be your only source. If you want a pretty book for your coffe table, or want beautiful reproductions of art you already know a thing or two about, this one is perfect.
