The purpose of this book is to help chemists, biochemists and other scientists purify the chemical reagents which they use in their work. Although commercially available laboratory chemicals are usually satisfactory as supplied for some purposes in science and technology, for many applications further purification is essential. Therefore the two main chapters of the book describe processes, taken from the literature, for purifying over 5000 organic, inorganic and organometallic commercially available chemicals. Two further chapters describe the methods and techniques currently used for purification in laboratories. In addition, for dealing with substances not separately listed, a chapter is included setting out methods for purifying specific classes of compounds. Finally, there is a new chapter dealing with biological substances which indicates current methods of purification in this area. This expanded and revised third edition includes several hundred individual compounds not previously covered, and more information is given for most entries, including melting and boiling points, molecular weights, refractive indexes, densities and Chemical Abstracts registry numbers, as well as likely contaminants and storage conditions in some cases. In addition, safety information and hazardous substances are indicated as appropriate. Recent developments in techniques of purification have also been added, including new chromatographic methods and materials.

It is difficult to make any statements of validity from my point of view as I am not trained in, nor educated in the field of chemistry except through self teaching. This wealth of information can only be the result of a river of sweat churned out by chemists living throughout the ages of which the authors drank heartily who then through much trial and sweat of their own gave it to us as honey. This book holds overwhelming amounts of it's subject matter and the methods to purify through straight forward descriptive techniques. I am very satisfied with this book!

This book directly gives you this information for thousand of chemicals!

The authors have obviously spent years purifying various compounds, and have reviewed material others have used regarding purification. They have listed their work and research in the book. The vast majority of this book, pages 80-577, is dedicated to purification of specific compounds. Out of the millions of compounds that may need purification, the one you need to purify may be listed. Then again. . .

What this book does not have much of are details regarding techniques. Pages 1-79 cover physical and chemical purification methods. This may at first seem thorough, until you realize there are dozens of techniques and these pages include many charts and tables. So, many techniques receive a paragraph or two of treatment and not much more; this same level of detail is usually gleaned from a textbook. There is not a single picture or diagram to amplify techniques. If you are very experienced in purification, the table and charts may be of help; then again, you probably don't need this book. If you're a novice at purification, such as me, the book is of little value to gain basic purification skills.

As with most text books, the general concept behind a purification technique is identified. Simple things, such as preparation of a sample for loading into a column, are not covered. It's assumed you know what you're doing, and that no problems arise when doing basic steps. So, you cannot pick up this book and learn how coax compounds into crystallizing when they will not readily do so.

In sum, a decent book for experienced chemists; of little utility for the novice.

This laboratory classic, originally Perrin and Armarego, is now in its 7th edition and has been translated into many languages, affirmations of the demand for the practical utility it provides. It is a compendium of practical bench chemistry information on compound purification methods and starting points, both as these relate to purification of commercial materials prior to new chemistry experimentation, but also of purification of newly prepared research substances. In addition, it has in past been the "go to" source for literature variations and ideas on the purifications of routinely used research substances ("back in the day," when the discipline of always checking/repurifying solvents and starting materials was a standard expected in all good preparative OChem operations). There is no other single book like Armarego's POLC that draws together the various kinds of information found here. While it has never been on the shelf of every student (good intel costs), it has been on the reference shelf of essentially every American synthetic enterprise that I have trained in or visited, and many European ones as well (and often on the shelves of the most productive students also). At the same time, arguing imitation as the sincerest form of flattery, many of the unpublished, local laboratory handbooks in good synthetic training venues present strikingly similar/overlapping bodies of practical laboratory "helps", as are found in this tome. Hence, POLC is, in this practicing and teaching chemist's opinion, a practical "must have" for trainees (access to, at least), alongside such complimentary references as Vogel's "Textbook of Practical Organic Chemistry" (ISBN 0582462363), Tietze ind Eicher's original "Reactions & Syntheses in the Organic Chemistry Laboratory" (ISBN 0935702504). and the Wiley Encyclopedia of Reagents for Organic Synthesis (e-EROS, ISBN 9780470842898, DOI 10.1002/047084289X)--the latter pithier, spot on when it speaks, but more limited in breadth for any given substance for which purification is addressed. In short, Armarego's continuing effort comes highly recommended, and earlier editions are just as desirable commodities on many levels. Finally, I have never seen the bindings fail on any of the earlier editions that passed through my groups hands--lose legibility as a result of chemical staining, yes, and even catch the occasional small smoldering fire... but fall apart, no. Even so, I would rather a folder or binder with a structurally failed copy, than not have access to it at all. Cheers, stay safe.
As a chemist, I am often in need of techniques for purification of various chemicals. Often time is a constraint and the "best" technique may be too time consuming, if one even knows what it is. This text offers several alternatives to the purificatin of most common compounds (especially solvents), including the best way to make the compound pure as well as other known techniques. One can then choose, based on the reaction one is doing whether one needs to use the best techniques or the fastest technique to get mostly pure material or somewhere inbetween. Unfortunately, often the text does not list the actual percent purity that each technique can yield (though it is often easy enough to guess which methodology will yield the best results.) An invaluable resource for any chemist, but especially for graduate students.
