This book has been one of the best of my many purchases This was the first book I bought related to race and sports car design. It is very well written, and Staniforth's writing style is very entertaining as well as being informative.

This book has been one of the best of my many purchases. My one regret is that I didn't have this book much earlier; I very nearly did, but when I began my project, "Race and Rally Car" looked wrong to my novices' eyes. I hadn't realised then that my planned sportscars were so closely related to Formula racecars in all their systems and dynamics. This was the first book I bought related to race and sports car design. The book covers all aspects related to building and modifying a sports car and does so in reasonable depth.

This guide has been updated to include recent developments in competition car technology. It gives detailed advice on all aspects of building or modifying competition cars, including suspension and steering, tools and construction techniques, tyres and aerodynamics. This guide also includes full descriptions of push and pullrod suspension, bump-steer and corner weighting.

Page from "Race and Rally Car Sourcebook" by Allan Staniforth. Helpfulness to amateur race car designers. The true value of this book is in the experience and lessons conveyed by the author-pitfalls, best practices, interesting ideas (. rubber suspension, suspensionless cars) and racing and building experiences. For someone looking to refine their design or study a successful designer's advice, this book has a great deal of value.

Here is a thorough guide to build and modify your race or rally car. Descriptions of champion circuit, rally and hill-climb cars from Formula 750 to Formula One will help you keep your project in perspective. This is a simple and easy to follow do-it-yourself guide and is a must-have for race, rally or hill-climbing enthusiasts.

Additional Product Features. Place of Publication. Allan Staniforth was originally a news reporter but is now a racing car consultant, applying lessons learned in 45 years as a successful competitor and car constructor. He lives in Harrogate, North Yorkshire. Country of Publication.

Okay, where to start. Like, The Hobbit, let's start at the beginning... Actually, no, the title. Race and Rally Source Book. The title is severely misleading. Mainly due to one word: Rally. That word should really be removed. I guess the 'and' before it, too. I bought the book for advice on prepping a car for competition rallying, and this seemed the obvious choice.

Nope.

There is no mention of long travel suspension components, spring rate advice for the topic. There is no advice whatsoever on chassis reinforcement, roll cage building. There was nothing whatsoever advising on skid plates, intake modification, brake biasing, and more.

However, what I DID get on rallying was about a 50 pages of historic and progressive vanguard rally cars like the Audi Quattro S1, and the Lancia Stratos. And this was of entirely no use to me for any sort of development. So yeah, nothing whatsoever at all to assist in the construction of a rally car. Not a single passage. So there's that.

Next. The information itself is severely outdated. There's not much more to say in that regard. Maybe in the 1990's it was cutting edge, but today is quite quaint.

Next.

For opening the chapter on suspension with something to the effect of "If you are involved in Formula 1 this chapter will be of no use to you" you'd think the author would then largely sidestep the dull suspension dynamics of F1, but you'd be wrong. Like, really wrong. Like half that chapter is then about formula 1 specifically, and the second half is almost entirely about open wheel suspension setups and essentially comparing them to F1. Oh, but thankfully one or two mentions of McPherson struts, which are the only suspension setup 99.9% of readers are going to want info on. Thanks for that. I learned nothing.

Next, how to fine tune your systems? Nothing except for a dry description of how F1 teams do it that has no value to any reader involved in any other autosport, including other Formula classes. I gleamed more creativity on suspension tuning by reading 2 paragraphs on Ford's website talking about the Boss 302 and that race teams would essentially just stiffen the front until it was nearly immobile then adopt a unique driving style to compliment it.

The only reason this book gets two stars is because of the chapter on aerodynamics had some useful graphs, though I'm sure for the same price I could have had a book about nothing but aero from Amazon.

So, essentially I learned nothing, and I'm back at square one. I would only recommend this book if you find yourself competing in Formula Ford, or one of the other less popular formula classes. If you're into rally, time attack, autocross, road cars, tuning, drifting, grand touring, or much of anything else, don't bother.

I have all of Alan's books and I recommend this one the most. It is an excellent all around guide that includes much of the information found in his other books. Enjoyable to read with his sense of humor and very informative. I believe I could have designed my current car build using only this book even though I have more than a dozen other technical books on chassis design, suspension design, and other aspects of car building, modifying, and tuning. Highly recommended.

This book creates the sensation that you have sat down at a British pub and your new mate started this whole business of "rally car racing" and he's retired so he wants to tell you his whole story now that he's got a firm grip on your ear. It certainly is folksy, charming and wordy, but if you don't mind reading endless, sort of amusing, anecdotes, letting you in on the real inside dope of who invented (and crashed) what, you may eventually get to something about building or modifying a car.

This is a spectacular story book, manual, tech book, HEY its all here and its all good. This book rocks. I have many books on this subject and I have carrol smiths books but this is the best book on the subject. I have made and prepped a lot of cars and I have a lot of books with the pretty pictures etc etc but somehow this is the one I end up reading at the end of the day. At crunch time the vital bit of info you need is probably in this book. If the name of the game is PRACTICAL and what you can really do and not what would be theoretically best but not possible then this book is it.

Good information. Need to be familiar with subject to understand and get the most from the book.

I have had a copy of the book since 2003. There is some good information in it, some of the information is very dated though. If your building a hillclimb formula car or similar that is the biggest focus of the book. I recommend it as a reference, if you can find a copy reasonable.

This is a great book for anyone wishing to enter the fields of competition car building, and car setup.

However, the material seems rather aged, and there are some mixup of facts in section about the Peugeot 205 at least.

The tyre data also seems to be out of date.
good book with alot of information. good if you are looking into racing or just have an interest in the sport
