For Secret Invasion, writer Brian Reed focuses on Ben alone as he gathers news of the Invasion from the streets of New York while trying and sometimes failing to help the average people he encounters along the way. Like the best disaster/survival stories, this is a scary, gripping, and psychologically complex tale that, by its end, manages even to be genuinely moving. Comic book readers who like psychological dramas will love this book, which reads well even without any knowledge of Marvel's bigger Secret Invasion story. Fans of traditional superhero stories, however, may find it lacks sufficient action and spectacle.

The Front Line trades show Marvel crossover events from the ground-eye view of common people, via intrepid report Ben Urich. Usually, it shows how the normal people are seeing the superheroes. This Secret Invasion tie-in is a little bit different.

Since superheroes often die and come back, the impact of death for them is minimized on the reader. This trade reinforces that war is ugly and brutal, especially for "non-combatants". When NYC is attacked, some people are trapped in Stark Tower, and a Skrull starts killing them one by one - leaving a traumatized teenager the only survivor. Meanwhile, a cabbie and a brave cop take it upon themselves to shepherd people out of the line of fire into the subway, only to be confronted with gang members who want to rob them. Through it all, even while recording the stories of these people, Ben thinks about his wife Doris. He can't reach her and doesn't know if she's alive or dead. There are a couple of pages where Ben stumbles upon our usual superheroes engaged in battle with the Skrulls, but for almost all of the book they are absent. This story reminds us that these heroes are supposed to be in the "real world" and there are real causalities in war.

Overall, this is an excellent tie-in to the crossover which gives the war a more visceral meaning. Though it does not expand the big picture for Secret Invasion, it does reinforce that the stakes are incredibly high for our heroes, and for the civilians they try to protect. Highly recommended.

Despite the title that Amazon put out, this book has NOTHING to do with Incredible Hercules. The premise here is with how the media dealt with the Secret Invasion. If you want the Hercules title that deal with the Secret Invasion, get Secret Invasion: Incredible Hercules.

As Skrull warships fill the skies, and heroes battle for their very survival in the Savage Land, the citizens of New York struggle to survive the worst day of their lives.it's really good as you hardly see the heroes at all while the normal humans are left to fend for themselves until help arrivess and this is all recorded by ben urich on his tape recorder going into his front-line article these are their stories

Secret Invasion: Front Line collects issues #1-5 of Secret Invasion: Front Line, originally published at the end of 2008 (as another reviewer already noted, Amazon seems to have mis-listed this book, which has nothing to do with Incredible Hercules). The trade paperback is competently produced with medium-gloss paper and a flexible binding. It contains no bonus art or other extras.

Marvel's various Front Line stories focus on two "everyman" reporters, Ben Urich and Sally Floyd, who invariably find themselves caught in the middle of each big Marvel universe event. What it lacks in superhero action, it makes up for in the humanness of its characters, defined as much by their limitations as their heroism. Marco Castiello's pencils suit the story well, but just as important is Barbara Ciardo's excellent coloring. By accounting carefully for light sources in her coloring, Ciardo creates a mood much more subtle and suspenseful than could have been achieved by traditional comic book coloring techniques.

Comic book readers who like psychological dramas will love this book, which reads well even without any knowledge of Marvel's bigger Secret Invasion story. Fans of traditional superhero stories, however, may find it lacks sufficient action and spectacle. For Secret Invasion fans, no new or important contributions to the main story surface here (as they did in Civil War: Front Line (Civil War (Marvel)), but if you liked the Secret Invasion crossover, you'll probably enjoy this as well.

I am no fan of this Secret Invasion marketing strategy adopted by Marvel for many of their titles. Basically a Skrull invasion of the Marvel universe, it is a cataclysmic event affecting all superhero titles. This book is not one of them. It appears to be a summary title of the event, and told from Ben Urich's (the ex-Daily Bugle reporter) point of view.

Who is Ben Urich? Well, he is the confidante of Daredevil, and also Spiderman. The decent reporter to the scheming Jonah Jameson character. Who is Jonah Jameson? Well, if you don't know, you should not be reading this comic as it is about very ordinary background characters who populate the Marvel Universe and who don't have superhero titles of their own. Anyway, JJ is not in this book.

Surprisingly, this comic is tolerable on its own. People are running away from human chomping skrulls and there are a few splash pages with the obligatory superheroes versus Skrulls brawl now and then to remind the reader that this is a Marvel cataclysmic event. The drawings are not very interesting and I rate this book a 2.5
