This volume collects all the comics in the Timestorm 2009/2099 story arc, which chronicles the events that transpire when a handful of modern Marvel heroes (as of 2009) are caught in a time crisis with a reworked cast of 2099 characters. Most readers will be familiar with the main cast of current timeline Marvel heroes. Almost all of the key good and bad guys on the 2099 side are 2099 versions of current heroes/villains: Spider-Man 2099, Ghost Rider 2099, Human Torch 2099, Punisher 2099, Scorpion 2099, etc. The notable exceptions are 2099 originals Shakti Haddad (from X-Men 2099), hologram assistant Lyla, and Alchemax CEO Tyler Stone, all of whom are significantly altered from their previous 2099 incarnations.

There was a time when Marvel maintained that 2099 WAS the future of the Marvel Universe, but that future has subsequently been relegated to alternate timeline status. One might suppose that since 2099 lost popularity, was completely dropped from publication in any form and is now just a tiny footnote in the long history of the Marvel Universe, there is no need to maintain any loyalty to the original 2099 future. However, while there are a lot of interesting ideas portrayed in this story concerning Marvel's future timeline, it isn't clear why it was necessary to reinvent 2099 rather than use the continuity that was already there. It seems that most of the better ideas could've been worked into the existing 2099 universe, and the rest were just the author trying to put his fingerprint on 2099 rather than use what others had already been created.

It would have been fun to see the original 2099 characters again after more than a decade, but that isn't what Marvel decided to do. So readers must not pine for that or deliberate too long on what could have been, but instead accept the offering for what it is. It is another alternate future, like so many we've already seen over the years from Marvel.

Given that, this is a lot of fun. The art is clean and glossy, with plenty of action from panel to panel. The story contains well written characters intertwined with a disastrously looming time paradox plot. (Warning: Mild Spoilers the rest of this paragraph) Of particular interest are the interactions of a brand new teen Spider-Man 2099 learning the ropes (or webs) from a Heroic Age mentor in the form of the modern day Spider-Man. The meeting of Wolverines is also cool to see. One intriguing concept (that could easily have been retroactively worked into the original 2099 universe) is that 2099 isn't really just 100 years or so years in the future. Instead, at some point following the Heroic Age, things got so bad that untold years were lost to history and it was actually centuries later.

Timestorm 2009/2099 isn't required reading, but it is a good buy for anyone who is a fan of 2099, Spider-Man and/or Wolverine. Unfortunately, those who know 2099 will spend most of their time noticing all the differences between what has been and what is created here. At times that is both enjoyable and disappointing. This collection might also be of interest to anyone looking for a nice, tight story arc featuring some of Marvel's most recognized characters. Over the course of 6 assembled comics you get one stand-alone story - a format that could appeal to someone who likes super hero-based stories, but isn't a comic collector.

As a fan of the original 2099 characters, I was expecting to see them return in all their glory. Instead, this was a bizarre story where the Punisher of 2099 is a religious fanatic, both the Spider-Man and Scorpion of 2099 are now teenagers, and the Ghost Rider and X-Men teams hunt Hulks in the wastes that used to be northern Virginia. The only heroes from the 2009 era present were Spider-Man and Wolverine. Spidey spent most of the story acting like a helicopter parent while Wolverine sneered and snarled. Avoid this book if you like the original 2099. Its only saving grace was the idea of the future's Ghost Rider hunting gamma-powered cannibals that breed like pups, despite the fact that no obviously female Hulks were present. Where do the babies come from?!

Interesting story, but it re-wriites the 2099 storyline. Good for those unfamiliar with the original 2099, but not bad in general.

Collects Timestorm 2009/2099 issues #1-4, Timestorm 2009/2099: X-Men, and Timestorm 2009/2099: Spider-Man

I recently read the first collection of "Spider-Man 2099," so I have a small understanding of what the 2099 universe is like. Because of that, I was thrown off by the beginning of this story because some things were very different from what I'd previously read.

As a warning to potential readers, this book presents an alternate 2099 than the one that came out in the 1990's. To be honest, I actually liked aspects of this version of 2099 better (specifically the the plot points related to the Hulks).

Two Marvel 616 heroes (Spider-Man and Wolverine) from our present day end up traveling to this alternate future, and they must help stop something that ruined the time stream. They are trying to fix time by stopping the Timestorm!
