I have had the pleasure of building two high school band programs. Many middle schoolers when they look at the local high school band feel that they are not on the same level of musicianship, and they cannot see getting to that level. The first went from 30 to 100 the first year, and to 190 within 6 years (in a school of 600 students). The second grew from 0 (brand new school) to 175 in three years. hed by understanding how to market and recruit students. As a director, you have to explain to these young people that it is your job to bring them up to that level, and that if they are willing to learn, you can get them there.
