Home David Guterson East of the Mountains. East of the mountains, . The doctor wouldn't even sew me up. He said it had been too long or something. A blizzard was general to the mountains now, but no one of rank would call off the maneuvers, and the company fumbled toward Ptarmigan Peak on empty stomachs, sleepless. Ben's feet bled from the gusseting of his shoepacs. 6. His fingers cracked open inside his gloves and the blood froze against his nails.

East of the mountains/by David Guterson. p. cm. ISBN 0-15-100229-0. He had done like things all evening long and so had found in the endpages of books his mothers neatly fountain-penned signature, and in a hinged cedar box his father's pocket watch, its face glass missing for fifty years. After midnight he came across photos long forgotten, at the bottom of a box, most of Renee, his daughter. There were photos of him, too. He hadn't been handsome, but he'd been strong and tall, blue-eyed like his mother, lean-jawed like his father. A letter arrived for Ben in May from a man named Willard Anderson, president of the Leavenworth Ski Club. Mr. Anderson remembered Ben from the time he'd passed on the jump at Ski Hill and urged him now to sign on with the mountain troops being raised by the Army. The 87th Mountain Infantry Regiment, he wrote, had been activated at Fort Lewis on the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor. There had been much training on the slopes of Mt. Rainier, and various advances had been made. West of the mountains the light ran to gray, hushed and annealed by ocean clouds, but here on the east side the world yielded and lay unguarded beneath the sun. They came down into the pine flats past the town of Easton, where half a dozen horses grazed on the north side of the highway. They passed the cutoff to Roslyn, the road grading down toward Cle Elum, the river twisting past gravel bars and islands, leaving sloughs and eddies behind, the tincture of autumn wood-stove smoke hanging heavily on the air. October moonlight illuminated hay fields, vineyards, sagelands, and apple orchards, and the land lay dry and silent.
There was not a soul to be seen in Vantage; the town appeared lifeless, barren. Everything close, the stones. Everything close, the stones and the grass, seemed hard-edged and vivid to Bens eyes, but in the distance the clear substance of things gave way to mirages and shadows. Tristan sidled over to lie at his feet and to rest his throat on Bens boot. Ben put one hand on the dogs muzzle and with the other prodded his own wounded forehead and massaged his aching temples.
