His 1970 book, The Sword of the Golem, based . 14, 1922, Abraham Alan Rothberg was the son of Louis and Lottie Rothberg.

His 1970 book, The Sword of the Golem, based on the Jewish folk tale of an anthropomorphic being created from inanimate matter, tells of a rabbi in 16th-century Prague who molds a golem out of clay, hoping it will be the savior that Jews in the ghetto have long prayed for. But in a terrifying climax, the creature runs amok among those it was supposed to save. His father, a garment worker who had emigrated from Russia, died when Abraham was a small boy. His mother, from Austria, supported the family as a clerical worker. As a child, Abraham was fascinated by history.

Through the book we get a glimpse into what it was like to be a This is a great retelling of the golem legend that I’m surprised isn’t more widely read. Overall, it sticks to the legend pretty closely but adds a lot of detail which is original. One thing I really liked about this book is that all of the characters are portrayed as being human. That the golem was made very human is not very surprising, but that Rabbi Low was made just as human, with faults as well as strengths, is the real twist. Through the book we get a glimpse into what it was like to be a Jew in that time, both the bad and.

Thou shalt mold a 'Golem' of clay who shall be your David against the new Goliath and Philistines. Whatever might be said in finding fault with this book as a literary work, I've had it around for almost thirty years and have enjoyed reading it several times. The fact Golem was a monster, the fact the Jewish community is portrayed as what it probably was, the fact that every element of this story is a tragedy, none of that takes anything away from it for me. I keep this one on the science fiction shelf of my mind, even though it's more than that, different from most science fiction.

Mr Maddened by rage at the mob murder of Kaethe, the Golem kills Jew and Gentile alike because they ""let it happen

Rothberg has been responsible for some intelligent and unusually full-bodied espionage novels and also a warm crossroads story of a Jewish boyhood (The Song of David Freed, 1968); this hortatory reappearance of a 16th century legend - Rabbi Low's Golem - has a current statement and bite. Here the giant formed from clay to defend the Jewish ghetto at Prague assumes a fatal humanity which includes even a fear of death. Maddened by rage at the mob murder of Kaethe, the Golem kills Jew and Gentile alike because they ""let it happen. Like Byron's Cain, the monster is helpless yet unforgiving of his creator.

A brutally modest book that uses history, legend, and myth for contemporary meanings, but still informed with optimism rooted in a passionate faith in man's intelligence and courage.

The Book of Abraham is a work produced between 1835 and 1842 by Joseph Smith based, he said, on Egyptian papyri purchased from a traveling mummy exhibition. According to Smith, the book was "a translation of some ancient records purporting to be the writings of Abraham, while he was in Egypt, called the Book of Abraham, written by his own hand, upon papyrus". Smith said the papyri described Abraham's early life, his travels to Canaan and Egypt, and his vision of the cosmos and its creation.

Through the book we get a glimpse into what it was like to be a Jew in that time, both the bad and the good. The story builds up to an inevitable pogrom in the ghetto, and the author spares the reader no detail in the savagery of it.

I keep this one on the science fiction shelf of my mind, even though it's more than that, different from most science fiction. It's historical fiction, it's fantasy, and in a sense it's a study in eastern European and Jewish cultural history.
I have no qualms about recommending it despite what others might see as literary flaws. I've dissected enough good books in university English departments to understand how perfect a work must be to survive the determined perusal by lesser men.
