The book is broken down particularly well with the chapters focusing on the event with a little history to bring you up to speed in later Very interesting real story of the frontier battles with Native Americans and the Buffalo Soldiers. And instead of a battle of opposing armies this becomes a survival story against the drought of Texas that truly endangered the 40 troopers and the Buffalo Hunter/Skinners that joined them to hunt for Comanche renegades that had left the reservation.

In the middle of thearid summer of 1877, a drought year in West Texas, a troop of some forty buffalo soldiers (African American cavalry led by white officers) struck out into the Llano Estacado from Double Lakes, south of modern Lubbock, pursuing a band of Kwahada Comanches who had been raiding homesteads and hunting parties. A group of twenty-two buffalo hunters accompanied the soldiers as guides and allies. Canseco-Keck History Series Paul H.

And now let us move from tragedy to tragedy. And despite a history of hostility between them, Tafoya apparently agreed to mislead the soldiers for the return of his stock plus interest. In February 1877 they attacked a group of buffalo hunters and stole their stock while wounding several hunters, one fatally. On March 18, the buffalo hunters struck back and then retreated while the Comanche did the same. The Comanche would continue sporadic raiding over the next several months. He deliberately translated parts of the conversation wrong to Nolan.

On the good side, this is a highly detailed account of what happened during this event on the high plains in 1877. The account is a little hard to follow due to the large number of names, locations, dates and jumping around of the narrative. Still, a worthwhile volume for reference though I would pass on it as a recreational read.

I have read several accounts of the 1877 Buffalo Soldier tragedy on the Llano Estacado. Paul Carlson's thoroughly researched work brings a new dimension to the reporting of Captain Nicholas M. Nolan's infated venture with 40 African American cavalry troopers on the Staked Plains. His work provides insight into the background and motivation of all the parties involved. Not only does Carlson provide more detail than I've seen elsewhere about the actions and suffering of Nolan and his men, Carlson describes the motivations and actions of Comanche Chief Parker, the Comanches who jumped from the reservation near Fort Sill, the people back at Fort Concho, and, of course the bison hunters. Carlson's report is complete. I think his analysis could have been shorter. His documentation is superb. His book is a good and quick read.
