LOSS - A new book for grieving children, non-readers-13 yrs. A sensitive tool for parents, counselors, & teachers. Wherever children are.

Other people left their village and went to the towns to find work. Loss of the American Colonies. In 1764 there was a serious quarrel over taxation between the British government and its colonies in America. It was a perfect example of the kind of freedom for which Wilkes had been fighting. The British government continued to think of the colonists as British subjects.

This one has all of the elements of a good read. It shows the rise and fall of a man with many demons, but with a determination to find the person/s who tore his heart out. It shows the love of family (mother, brother, etc.) and the scars of a father's abuse in a family. This is a story of survival, inner conflict and, ultimately, triumph. Gus loves his wife and he wants her in his life, but he cannot escape the ghosts of his past. As a journalist, he uses the skills of his former career to find the truth and to reveal the murderer of his brother. LOSS isn't always physical; psychological loss, loss of a happy childhood, are indeed losses. This book is worth reading with eyes and heart open,
In this third novel in the series Gus Drury has finally seen sense and has not had a drink in six months.
Even better he and his wife are back together and things look rosier than they have been in years, that is until he is roused by a phone call from the Edinburgh Police
at 2 am telling him he is needed at their HQ immediately and a car will collect him. At the Station he is asked to identify a murder victim and find to his horror it is his brother, successful factory owner with no known enemies.
One again Gus starts unravelling the case impeded as usual by bent coppers and red herrings.
Will he stay off the booze, will he and his wife stay together as tensions rise ?
Get this novel and find out.
Be warned it contains loads of bad language, a lingua franca in Edinburgh now as ever.
Gus Dury is back with his wife, Debs, although their relationship is fragile. Also fragile is Gus' new-found sobriety. Relationship and sobriety are both threatened when Gus' brother is murdered and Gus, needless to say, resists all exhortations to leave the investigation to the police. His own attempts to find his brother's killer put him on the wrong side of just about everybody - the law, Debs, and some seriously dangerous men. Sometimes it seems as though Gus' only friends are his dog, Usual, and the unopened quarter bottle of whisky Gus keeps in his pocket. Luckily for Gus, he does have two good friends who step in and help him, without thought for their own safety. As Gus struggles to come to terms with the loss of his brother, things get darker and more dangerous. Wonderfully written, tough, edgy, and very dark, but with the odd flash of humour, LOSS made me cry at the end.
What a series, what a writer!!!. Gus continues his struggles, with himself and the Law. Brilliantly written portrayal of a man seeking vengeance and keeping his own demons contained.
I read it from cover to cover in a day...this is a gripping emotional rollercoaster and by far the best in the Gus Drury Series. In brief - Gus investigates the murder of his brother Michael, the family success story against the backdrop of recession-torn Edinburgh. Chasing criminal kingpins and their illegal scamming ways while he battles the bottle and struggles to keep Debs in his life - it never gives up on the surprises.
I think what really did it for me is that the author channels the emotional devestation of grief so well into Gus that we can really see what a complex and misunderstood man he is...a ruthless but sensitive trailblazer who searches for answers in a fairytale city with a very dark soul. It reminds me of Raymond Chadlers 'The Big Sleep' in that way...decay and badness everywhere despite its shiny surface. Yes there were times when I wanted to slap him but I gave him a chance, held my breath and it paid off. The ending is fantastic...I never seen it coming.

Given that so much crime fiction these days is lacking in originality, I really think Tony Black is the best thing to come out of Scotland since Irvine Welsh...the grit is there, the dark tales are there and the hopelessness of living at all shines through as Gus struggles on with the odds stacked high against him. Brilliant, such a great voice.
