History of the United States Marine Corps. The history of the United States Marine Corps (USMC) begins with the founding of the Continental Marines on 10 November 1775 to conduct ship-to-ship fighting, provide shipboard security and discipline enforcement, and assist in landing forces. Its mission evolved with changing military doctrine and foreign policy of the United States.

During the American Revolution, the Continental Congress passes a resolution stating that two Battalions of Marines be raised for service as landing forces for the recently formed Continental Navy. The resolution, drafted by future . president John Adams and adopted in Philadelphia, created the Continental Marines and is now observed as the birth date of the United States Marine Corps. Serving on land and at sea, the original . Marines distinguished themselves in a number of important operations during the Revolutionary War.

The twelve chapters cover, in detail, the broad range of handguns and longarms used from pre-revolutionary years of the eighteenth century to modern-day Vietnam. Included also are sections (each superbly illustrated) on the use and wearing of the great variety of swords and cutlasses of both officers and enlisted men, midshipmen's and officer's dirks, fighting and utility knives, boarding axes and pikes, signal guns, blunderbusses, and shotguns.

Printed in 1972. Covers US Navy, Marines, and Coast guard arms. Although the jacket cover has one color photo of a dirk, the book contains lots and lots of B&W photos only, along with a few B&W sketches. Includes firearms, swords, dirks, knives, axes, and daggers. Some items have a good description along with closeup photos for identifying your collection, however not all pieces are well described. Some sword grips are described, while other grips are not described and one then does not know if the grip is horn, tusk, ivory or bone. I would have liked at least a few color photos.
