Whenever Stephen Ambrose would be asked which of his books is his best, he would answer by saying his latest one. This effort entitled "To America" is not the longest by any stretch, but of the half dozen of his books that I have read, I enjoyed this one the most. Ambrose covers America from our country's beginnings right into the year 2002 when he died.

Esthus's book is probably _the_ reference work on Australian-American relations from 1931 to 1941. He draws on primary resources (particularly the perspectives of American and Australian officials) to populate his chapters on the trade-related disputes at the heart of bilateral tensions throughout the 1930s - which persisted even as the strategic threat of an assertive Japan loomed.

As an Australian, I found the account of Australia's diplomatic efforts to secure a bilateral trade deal quite, well, embarrassing. It is hard to credit such parochialism, naivete and narrow-mindedness by successive Australian governments - though Esthus does a great job (especially for an American!!) in explaining the domestic political factors shaping Australia's policy. That said, clearly Washington was not prepared to compromise on some of its political interests - particularly its agricultural interests. Interestingly, many of these same debates were played out in the 1980s, with the Cairns Group and the Uruguay Round - though with the EU being the other protagonist: Australia (and other Cairns Group agricultural exporters) being caught in the crossfire.

Definitely one for the home library. Only a short book, it contextualises the bilateral relationship vis-a-vis the Imperial relationship well. It helps provide the necessary background for understanding the evolution of Australian-American relations from the 1940s and beyond. I was lucky to find a hardcover copy on Amazon via the used/hardcover section. A real bargain!

Font too small.

I have just started reading Ambrose's work, and I enjoy every moment of it. He has a wonderful sense of history, he is not afraid to admit his mistakes, and does not criticize. I can not stand historians who argue with should, could and would. Mr. Ambrose does none of that. I can't say I agree with every conclusion he draws, but that's what makes like interesting.

Great writing. Very well-reseached. Heart warming stories about common individuals. If you like Ambrose, you'll enjoy reading this book. Enjoy.

I'm not into the civil war myself so it was hard to read through the first part, but once it got to ww2, then I really started enjoying the book.
