Covers the first attempts to move a circus by rail.

Covers the first attempts to move a circus by rail. I was really not aware (my own fault) that it was not as current as I might have hoped, although it is an excellent historical reference to earlier days of circus railroading. Let me just say that this is mostly geared toward (will appeal to) avid rail or circus fans interested in the full history, particularly of the circus train.

The idea for moving the circus by rail came from William Cameron Coup and the first was implemented in 1872. Until that time, circuses and menageries, struggled from town to town in parades of wagons, all drawn by circus horses. They had to deal with mud, dust, and weather of all manner. The train provided relative comfort with coaches for the performers and rest for the animals, not to mention shelter from the weather. At first, there was reluctance to adopt the new means of conveyance as is typical with any new innovation

I admit I got motivated to buy this book upon learning of the demise of the Ringling Brothers circus and the circus trains that for well over 100 years traveled our country's rails bringing the circus from town to town. I was really not aware (my own fault) that it was not as current as I might have hoped, although it is an excellent historical reference to earlier days of circus railroading. Let me just say that this is mostly geared toward (will appeal to) avid rail or circus fans interested in the full history, particularly of the circus train. If you're expecting to find stories and photos of the Ringling trains during their more recent years (the Feld era) you may find it lacking. I wouldn't say I was really disappointed, but on the other hand my copy will probably wind up on eBay at some point. I should have paid more attention to the copyright date before ordering.

The history of the circus train has a lore of its own. The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus Train visited our city for 31 years. During that time, each winter, it returned and, on occasion, performers lived in the cars while they planned and rehearsed the shows for the upcoming year. Also, RBBB brought used railroad cars here for reconfiguration for its circus train use. While everyone know about the circus performers, the workers behind the scene played very important roles. Their accommodations on the train were minimal and that was home for most of the year.
