John Tracy Ellis of his essay on "American Catholics and the Intellectual Life. In 1955 there were over 200 Catholic colleges in the United States, and Ellis regarded the number as a liability rather than as an asset. Even more alarming, from his point of view, was the fact that the process seemed to be repeating itself on the university level.

The Catholic Church remains one of the oldest institutions of Western civilization. It continues to withstand attack from without and defection from within. In his revision of American Catholicism, Monsignor Ellis has added a new chapter on the history of the Church since 1956. Here he deals with developments in Catholic education, with the changing relations of the Church to its own members and to society in general, and especially with arguments for and against the ecumenical movement brought about by Vatican Council II.

This book was commissioned and written in the mid 1970's and reports on the state of affairs to that time. Seems well researched and written and as far as I can tell fairly free of bias .It is a part of a series to books written by Eugene Kennedy and Andrew Greeley. I suggest all three should be read for those interested as to how it was before all the revelations.

John Tracy Ellis (1905-1992) was a priest and Catholic Church historian, who spent most of his career as a faculty member at Catholic University in Washington, DC, but also taught at the University of San Francisco between 1963 and 1976. He was a long serving executive secretary of the American Catholic Historical Association and editor of the Catholic Historical Review (1941-62).

He writes in the Preface to this 1971 book, "These essays do not constitute a history of the American Catholic priesthood. They represent rather an investigation of five distinct aspects of the priesthood as it has been lived in the American Church, five viewpoints or approaches, so to speak, to a very broad and highly varied spectrum that embraces in its totality much more than is found here."

Here are some quotations from the book:

"As far as the choosing of candidates for the episcopacy is concerned, the fact that the first bishop in the United States was elected by the clergy was never forgotten by subsequent generations of American priests." (Pg. 112)
"Anti-Catholicism, it has been said, was the pornography of the Puritan. The evangelical American Protestant looked upon hordes of Catholic immigrants with both fear and fury; fear because he saw in them a threat to his livelihood, his free institutions, and his prevailing social peace; fury because he saw the noble Protestant nation-state swarming with ignorant, superstitious, priest-ridden papists who infected the evangelical body with all the diseases of European Catholicism." (Pg. 309)
"John A. Ryan ... won converts where other men received censure, even though his message was usually no less radical... Ryan was the leading Catholic progressive, but he was not alone." (Pg. 441-442)
