In the history of the Nile there was a void: its Sources were a mystery. Even Roman energy failed to break the spell that guarded these secret fountains. The work has now been accomplished. Three English parties, and only three, have at various periods started upon this obscure mission: each has gained its end.

Map of the Nile Valley. ONE The Nile Egypt’s Eternal River. The river is the unifying thread that runs throughout Egyptian history, culture and politics. It has shaped Egypt’s geography, controlled its economy, moulded its civilisation, and determined its destiny

Map of the Nile Valley. TWO Aswan Source of the Nile. THREE The Deep South Where Egypt Began. FOUR Luxor City of Wonders. It has shaped Egypt’s geography, controlled its economy, moulded its civilisation, and determined its destiny. From Egypt’s earliest art (prehistoric images of fish-traps, carved into cliffs overlooking the river) to the Arab Spring (fought over on the bridges of Cairo), the Nile has been central to Egypt’s story. Throughout the country, the connections between past and present are many and deep.

A Hercule Poirot Mystery

A Hercule Poirot Mystery. To my old friend Sybil Bennett. who also loves wandering about the world. Death on the Nile was written after coming back from a winter in Egypt. When I read it now I feel myself back again on the steamer from Assuan to Wadi Halfa. I think, myself, that the book is one of the best of my foreign travel ones, and if detective stories are escape literature (and why shouldn’t they be!) the reader can escape to sunny skies and blue water as well as to crime in the confines of an armchair.

Veronica Scott pecially rejoiced in having Tyema as her special guest. Queen Ashayet was not attending this event. Tyema wished the Great Royal Wife was to be there. She felt safer in the queen’s presence, which of course was ridiculous. Ashayet had no power to thwart a sorceress.

The Nile tributaries of Abyssinia, and the sword hunters of the Hamran arabs. One fee. Stacks of books.

The Nile has a stream of about a mile and a half per hour, as it sweeps suddenly round the angle, changing its downward course from north to east. The breadth in this spot does not exceed 130 yards; but it is impossible to determine the actual width of the river, as its extent is concealed by reeds with which the country is entirely covered to the horizon. The White Nile having an upward course of west 10 degrees north, variation of compass 10 degrees west, from the Sobat to the Bahr el Gazal junction, now turns abruptly to south 10 degrees east
