How to See was originally published in 1977. More than a guide to visual appreciation, this is a book about how to recognize, evaluate, and understand the objects and landscape of the man-made world. The pursuit of design is not about the way things appear, but rather about the way things give meaning and relevance to the human experience.

In each chapter Nelson discusses a way to understand and interpret the visual information presented through photographic illustrations - the book is appropriately subtitled A Guide to Reading our Man Made Environment. Stanley Abercrombie, architect and writer

Stanley Abercrombie, architect and writer. The text, as well as the photographs, are insightful, inspiring, provocative and Nelson's text is written with an entertaining wit. This book, now considered a classic, can be appreciated by students and design buffs alike.

HOW TO SEE. GEORGE NELSON, the modernist designer, writer and lecturer, who was the design director of Herman Miller, took pictures constantly, not so much to make a beautiful image, but to capture an idea: how a crushed soda can is transformed into a beautiful shape; what a sign means; how to say no in an urban environment.

I didn't realize this was the Design Within Reach edition. Wish I'd looked closer before ordering.

The author helps the reader to see beyond our immediate and obvious environment. This will change your experience and perception of the daily encounters we all have with buildings, furniture, signs, advertising, font styles, shapes, designs, dimension and color. While this may not appeal to everyone I find it fascinating!
Zodama
Explains various design techniques in everyday objects.
Laitchai
Good book for introducing seeing to artists and designers. Accompanying text is well written.
Tisicai
Must read for anyone interested in visual design by the most important American designer AND theorist of the 20th century.

I was expecting some great insights from a design visionary. However, after a few initial essays (which were forgettable) the famed author proceeds to go through a slide-show of his photo collection, matching by common traits. Even THAT would be acceptable if coupled with a designer's perspective on "how to see" those images in such a way that it leads to some greater insight about design or aesthetics. No ... sometimes the observations are quite pedantic.
