Rosemary Taylor, Chris Lloyd. In this fascinating and evocative book, Rosemary Taylor and Christopher Lloyd recall the extraordinary effect of wartime on the lives of the inhabitants of the East End. The Boer War and the First World War form the early part of the story but it is the momentous events of the Second World War that fill the body of the book. After the British defeat at Dunkirk and the fall of France, Hitler's Luftwaffe was within easy reach of London.
Toward the end of the war we see Joe connecting up with Russian units . Taylor has laid out quite a story and written a wonderful book.
Toward the end of the war we see Joe connecting up with Russian units after his third and successful escape in Poland. Joe incredibly asks to join this Russian infantry unit and fights with them against the Nazis as they drive westward to defeat the Germans. In it,his reflections on war, life, death, pain, joy, and even the afterlife are explored in a new and different perspective. I have read quite a few books on WWII but this book was quite different from all the rest. Taylor had a terrific subject in Joe and his war stories-adventure within adventurers. Joe is one helluva interesting person.
The war to end war" (also called "The war to end all wars") was a term for the First World War of 1914–1918. Originally idealistic, it is now used mainly sardonically.

The conquest of the Marianas was almost as important a milestone in the history of the Pacific war as the invasion of France was in the European struggle. In the South Pacific, the advances in New Guinea put our forces on the doorstep of the Philippines; and in Burma, despite the monsoon, British, American and Chinese forces won remarkable and still growing victories. Both in the East and the West the end was beginning to be clearly defined. II. The invasion of western Europe was the greatest and most successful combined operation of its type in military history.
East London during the Second World War was a prime target for German bombs. The East End of London contains some of the city’s most important dockland areas. At the time, it was a hub for imports and was used to store vital goods for the war effort, making this a prime target for bombing raids. In basic terms, if the Luftwaffe could disable the East End, it cut off a pivotal part of London’s supply chain. If you could do that, you also caused a severe strain all over the United Kingdom and weakened the country as a whole.
