Masterworks) Paperback – February 14, 2013. I found it to be a well-written book, offering a compelling story creatively structured with alternating scenes in the present and past.

Ammonite by Nicola Griffith; this was awful. I tried so hard to get through this book and it just dragged on forever without enough story or interesting characters to get me through it. It's kind of a trite plot (a planet that has a mysterious virus that causes men to die).

The Nebula Award Winner–1996. She awoke in an alley to the splash of rain. Rivers were the source of civilization, the scenes of all beginnings and endings in ancient times. She was naked, a foot-long gash in her back was still bleeding, and her identity implant was gone. Babies were carried to the banks to be washed, bodies were laid on biers and floated away. Births and deaths were usually communal affairs, but I was here alone.

But I do have to point out that Griffith, really is a brilliant writer. Every book I have read by her, make me think and feel

Books : Slow River (. MASTERWORKS) (Paperback). I really like something - I'm not 100% sure what - about Griffith's storytelling. She was naked a foot-long gash in her back was still bleeding and her identity implant was gone. I know this because this is the third book of hers I've read, and they are all about completely different things, but I've been totally engrossed in all of them. She has a love of nature and science and sapphic love that pervades all her work, so that might be one reason why.

I have never been a fan of this genre, so I was surprised at how much I liked this book! Set in the future, but it doesn't seem all that far-fetched. I enjoyed the main character, and found the storyline riveting. I didn't see the key plot twist coming, but it made a lot of sense once it did. It makes me want to read more of this author's work

Slow River is a good sf book. Good, in having deep characters set in a well founded scientifically universe. Good, in having a plausible narrative with interesting conflict and character development.
It is set in the near future, where Lore, the heroine, finds herself naked after escaping from her kidnappers.
The story is told in multiple times, when Lore is a child and a teenage in a rich and very intelligent family. At the time of the kidnap and Lore's escape from it. At the beginning of the her time with Spanner, the woman who saves Lore and then corrupts her. And at the present, when Lore is trying to be a law abiding person with a day job.
I think what left the greatest mark on my mind is the way the book is written, relative to the plot. The book is written some of the time in third person, some of the time in first person, and that is the way that Lore treats herself, from a vessel of other people's wishes (her mother and father, and later Spanner), unto a person which decides her own path in life.

The underlying sexual abuse is threaded from the beginning of the book. At first as subtext, and later as something which Lore is aware that it happened.
I think of Lore and her two sisters as three different way of dealing with sexual abuse. Stella, who kills herself when she understands. Greta, who becomes psychopathic in the sense of disregarding laws and doing what she believes in, without regards to others. And Lore, who lets her body and soul be abused because her self esteem doesn't let her refuse. Until the author lets Lore heal, and be redeemed, find the ability to trust and ask for help, in a world/life where trust and faith are dangerous because the people who were supposed to protect you didn't do it.

I'm shocked that there is only one review of Nicola Griffith's Slow River on Amazon. I don't know where I got the copy I read--a 1995 Del Rey Balantine edition, but given Griffith's standing in the lesbian community I would have thought Slow River would have garnered dozens of positive reviews. I found it to be a well-written book, offering a compelling story creatively structured with alternating scenes in the present and past.

I won't go into the plot. Let me just say as a straight male reader, I recommend this for all audiences as an example of a story that will grab your attention where the fact the protagonist is a lesbian is of secondary import. In fact, the word lesbian never appears in the book.
