I knew who Tom Sullivan was and of course I love Betty White so I really looked forward to this book. I have several blind friends, and all but one have had guide dogs. I do a lot of dog training for obedience/rally/agility so I was very interested in the training and "technical" aspect of the book.

I enjoyed this book - I didn't want to analyze it or over think it, just wanted to read it and enjoy it which is what I did. I did find the ending a little "fake", but I just went with it and didn't let it ruin anything for me. Having blind friends I know how incredibly independent and accomplished they can be - and that part of the book certainly rang true.

I was raised in Colorado so I especially enjoyed that part of the book. Some of the book was told from the dog's point of view and that helped put some things in perspective.

Have a friend who was recently hiking at Maroon Bells (you'll have to read the book to understand) and she just posted a photo of her there with her two dogs on Facebook. No, she isn't blind and these were not guide dogs - just an interesting thing to see posted after I'd finished the book .
My days and weeks have been tough lately. However, reading this book has not only had me to count my own blessings but also realize that life is a challenge. We are all "blind" in ways that sometimes we cannot see. Not thrilled with the beginning of the book with the cruelty to the dog but barreled through and I am glad I did. Love the relationship between man and dog. If you are anything like me, you will need a tissue now and then. Not from sadness but from feeling happiness, overwhelming and filling your heart, that a dog can have such a powerful impact on a human life. That when we open our hearts, love abounds! But then I am a sentimental softie! I really hope you enjoy this book as much as I did!
I read this book in two days -- it was that good. I am about to start raising a puppy for Guide Dogs of America and I was looking for a book that would talk about blindness from the point of view of a blind person. What I didn't expect was a wonderful, exciting story that would keep me glued to my Kindle for hours on end. For anyone who loves the outdoors, animals, or just a good read, I strongly recommend this book.
Really and truly, the word "stuff" is very distracting in this book. Here I am, visiting this young man and dog's world, completely enthralled, and along comes the word, "stuff." A believably seasoned rock climber lists his preparedness and then vaguely mentions looking down at his "stuff", a guide-dog training expert uses appropriate terms for all materials used in harnessing a dog and then refers to it in the whole as "stuff", and finally a ski instructor, with again ostensibly some amount of technical expertise asks another seasoned skiier if he has his "stuff." Stuff is the word one ought to use for generic materials, anyone with some kind of subject matter expertise is likely to call these items gear or equipment, not "stuff". This threw me, frustrating the believability of the characters. Please, dear authors, make your experts sound like experts.
Well written. A blind man learning to accept condition, with help of seeing eye dog. Climber with dog guiding. Well researched. Well written and highly recommend. Phyllis

The book drew my attention because I retired after years as a National Park Ranger and more years as a wilderness specialist, concluding my career working for access to wilderness and the back country for persons with disabilities. We were also "puppy raisers" for Guide Dogs for the Blind. Our best friend has also traveled with us, around the U.S. and abroad, with her dog guide. The story does an excellent service in giving those who have NOT had experience with disability or service animals, exposure to the fantastic love, intelligence, and unlimited promise, of these "best friends". For those learning to adopt to a disability, it also offers not just sentimental "hope", but a very real introduction to how the world will change, NOT end, for those who must adapt. Sullivan and White also show that dog may really be "God" spelled backward. I recommend the book. Having spent years in search and rescue, the two important "drama points" of the book regarding mountaineering also serve as proof that even "experienced" people do some dumb things they should NOT when dealing with the mountain. So even those "able bodied" folks heading for the hills can take away a lesson in what NOT to do.
"Together", is a beautifully written book that lets you into so many places you are not allowed to go. Into the heart and head of a wonderful dog, who understands he has a job and wants to do it, well. And, into the heart of a man who has never had to totally trust others and finds out how in trusting others he could totally trust himself. This book is a lovely gift of the sharing of souls.. A book for all. Men will also enjoy this book. And any young person who loves dogs and the mountains. It is my favorite gift, to give, this summer.. My guy friends have truly enjoyed ..a lot.
This book is about trust taken to its extreme. The blind man learns to give unconditional love and unconditional trust to his service dog while the dog does the same for his master. It is a special bond with amazing results as dog and man participate in various activities together with each taking turns helping the other. I really enjoyed the book and wish it was longer.
