Well designed book. Many beautiful pages. Does say layouts by JOHN ROMITA but the art still looks like ROMITA'S style. Although it's not inked by Romita in the "finishes" I would buy it again.

Awesome book of original art in its raw format, some pages with story and scripting notes in the margins. Fantastic!

I agree with the other reviewer. This is not the best representation of Romita. I had this edition and traded it in. The Gil Kane edition better features Romita through his inks on several stories including 121, plus the covers for 121 & 122 that Romita pencilled and inked. There is a second volume which showcases Romita's last run on ASM when he was both penciling and (mostly) inking. The best and purist Romita work is ASM 39-50. An artifact edition of the latter has now been announced and will ship in Jan. 2015! 200 pages from ASM issues 39-52 are featured. This is Romita at his best on the series, even if, as he claims, he was trying to keep to Ditko. The second Romita volume (ASM 106, 108-115) is pure Romita. Volume 1, I would say is for completists only. The run is broken up because several issues had been drawn by Buscenma (now I'd pay for that artwork!).

This first volume book is all Romita penciling except issue #84. Romita drew BREAKDOWNS on every issue (not layouts) Breakdowns are much closer to full pencils than they are LAYOUTS. (This information confirmed by John Romita himself) It's very easy to look at all pages from 67-69, 71 and 75 to see they look nothing like Jim Mooney's penciled artwork.

Good things first: It's a beautiful looking, solidly built book. Love the large size pages, love the color scans from original art. But...

As mentioned in other reviews, these aren't prime Romita Spidey comics. I would much rather see IDW publish the best available artwork rather than focus on reproducing entire issues. Not sure what the point is, since readers who want to read the comics would be much better served with less expensive compilations. I would think that the people who buy these editions are more interested in viewing the artwork in the best reproduction quality possible than reading the story. Personally, I would much rather see (for example), a book of prime Kirby Fantastic Four pages in no particular order than the artwork of complete issues of Devil Dinosaur.

One other quibble: the scans cut out most of the notes that Romita and Lee (or others) wrote in the page margins. Wish that the publishers had kept those in.

This edition puzzles me. I know it's Marvel Silver Age stories/art, and is undoubtedly produced with super-high standards. But it's a John Romita "artist's edition," and supposedly the stories reproduced therein are from AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #s 67-69, 71, and 74-75.

Issue #67 is penciled by John Romita, with inking by Jim Mooney, so no huge deal there. But #s 68-69, 71, and 74-75 (supposedly reprinted in this book) all have but John Romita LAYOUTS, with finishes (pencils and inks) by JIM MOONEY! This is arguably more of a Jim Mooney "artist's edition" than it is Romita's! (I am not sure if this book has AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #84 reprinted therein, as noted by Amazon.com, instead of or in addition to #74. But if so, that's also a strange issue to include, with it containing John Romita LAYOUTS, John Buscema PENCILS, and Jim Mooney INKS!)

I'd also take issue with the particular stories reprinted, which I don't feel are truly outstanding (in terms of writing AND art). Much better Romita material certainly was published in the Silver Age. And it would have been more appropriate to publish Spider-Man tales 100% drawn by Romita, and stories where Romita provided 100% of the penciling as opposed to merely layouts. For example, AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #s 39-40, Romita's first issues on the title, would have been appropriate and feature full Romita pencils (with Mike Esposito inks). And DAREDEVIL #s 16-17 would have been a plus, with Romita's "try-out" of the guest-starring Spider-Man, and also boast full Romita pencils (with Frank Giacoia inks).

I realize a lot of Romita original art from the comics I mentioned above, along with many others, may not have been available for reprinting puposes. But to "default" to those particular issues of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN seems strange to me. Which is why I can't rate this at more than 3 stars.
