This is the fascinating story of twin sisters born in 1843, Scotland, who were raised to be intellectually curious, open minded, attended excellent schools, were encouraged to ask questions, learned to think and analyze, AND had an incredible affinity to learn languages. Their mother died when they were 3 weeks old, and their father decided it would cause more problems to remarry. He dedicated himself to his law practice and educating his girls. Foreign languages had been a hobby of the father's, so he started them on Italian, French, Spanish and German at an early age. They later learned Hebrew, Syriac, Greek, Arabic and others totaling 14 languages.

The father had married late, so was well established financially, plus he inherited wealth, which he left for the girls. He died when they were 23 years old. They were raised strict Presbyterian. They could not see themselves contentedly devoting the rest of their lives to passing their days in endless social calls, visiting the 'poor', teaching Sunday School, assisting in the Ladies Knitting Party. They chose a much more intellectual and fulfilling and exciting path in life which began with travel and ended up going by camel across the Sinai desert to St. Catherine monastery near Mt. Sinai where they discovered early Syriac versions of the gospels...they lived to a ripe old age continuing to translate and decipher the palimpsests they had discovered and ended up with their portraits hanging in the Hall of Cambridge Theological College in England.

I have so much enjoyed this book! LOVE IT!!! Wonderful writing. I also read another book about Agnes and Maggie Smith ("the Giblews"). The other one was "Sisters of Sinai" by Janice Soskice. Both books are wonderful. "Castlebrae" gives a little more information about the personal lives, their relationship with each other, with their friends. I had never heard of these ladies until my Book Club chose "Sisters..." to read, then I couldn't get enough of the twins, and bought "Ladies of Castlebrae". Fascinating, interesting. Fantastic writer...A. W. Price makes me laugh in how he describes some of their foibles and eccentricities. Their story would make a fascinating movie or series of episodes! Life can be more fun and interesting than fiction. These two books are amazingly entertaining and fun to read. It's wonderful to read about the Twins' adventures, their personalities, their challenges, their courage! So much courage! These are Victorian women accomplishing amazing feats of discovery.

I love reading about the accomplishments of real women in the real world.
This is the biography of 19th century British twins who make biblical discoveries any man would surely have given his eye teeth to discover. Yet, from the beginning, they had to fight for every ounce of credit they received.
The space that A. Wigham Price uses on social events in the lives of the twins can surely be overlooked when one looks at the credit he gives them for their linguistic scholarship and the determined research they did into the Sinaitic Palimpsest, written in Syriac, which they discovered at St. Catherine's. St. Catherine's Monastery, at the foot of the Sinai, was founded in the 5th century by Justinian. At the time of the twins first visit, the Monks there did not speak or read Syriac, and the twins discovery of the Palimpsest was by hard work and sheer determination.
Anyone interested in the challenges women face today would enjoy reading of the hardships the twins encountered in the 19th century.
