Born in Angers in 1940, Danièle Sallenave, is a French literary theoretician and novelist. Villes et villes (1991) explores Rome, Leningrad, and Calcutta. Adieu (1988) evokes a brief period a young man spends with his elderly uncle. Her early works, beginning with Paysages de ruines avec personnages (1975), are formal experiments; the narrative organization of Le Voyage d'Amsterdam (1977) resembles a musical score.
