Portugal's Golden Years adds detail and insight about international politics and influences in such a way that the reader sees a full and intimate portrait of Prince Henry while strolling at a leisurely pace through 16th century Portugal. While any biography can list a person's lineage and accomplishments, here you will discover what kind of man was "The Navigator," both as prince and explorer. The author extends this the biography far beyond the character's single lifetime by exploring the repercussions in a timeline that extends to the present

Infante Dom Henrique of Portugal, Duke of Viseu (4 March 1394 – 13 November 1460), better known as Prince Henry the Navigator (Portuguese: Infante Dom Henrique, o Navegador), was a central figure in the early days of the Portuguese Empire and in the 15th-century European maritime discoveries and maritime expansion. Through his administrative direction, he is regarded as the main initiator of what would be known as the Age of Discovery

Before Columbus, da Gama, or Magellan went on their trips of discovery, a Portuguese prince created the conditions to initiate voyages to the Western African coast. By doing so, he inspired seagoing mariners to realize their accomplishments. In a time when superstition and fear limited sea travel to known coastal waterways, Prince Henry literally prepared the way and started the Age of Discoveries.

Portugal’s Golden Years provides a comprehensive look at the life of Prince Henry, both as a member of a distinguished royal family and as an organizer and planner of the first sea trips that went beyond known lands. Much more than a biography, this portrait of Prince Henry also gives insight into the tools the old mariners had at their disposal, the advances made in the Art of Navigation during his lifetime, the adventure of discovery, and especially the influence these early Portuguese explorers ultimately had on the far-reaching cultures they encountered.

The author has an easy subject because the subject is very adventurous - but he tells it well. Steeped in superstition, the Portuguese were terrified of sailing South beyond Cape Bojador and Gil Eanes, the captain who was commissioned to sail into the unknown, had to trick his crew to do it. Prince Henry the navigator, the subject of the book, was overjoyed at this accomplishment, one of the early victories of a long exploration enterprise.

Carlos B. Carreiro's book appears to be a true labor of love. With a concise and easy prose he takes the reader through the life and explorations of Henry the Navigator.

When I received this book as part of the Dorrance review team, I literally had no expectations, but after I began reading I found it fascinating. I didn't know much about Henry the Navigator but after reading Carreiro's book, I feel that I have learned as much as I could about the subject.

I found it to be an interesting and informative biography in which Carreiro seems to leave no stone unturned. He explains, for instance, how and why figures like Henry and his father Pedro received their monikers. The book includes a rather large "Selected Bibliography" and even includes a listing of the years and latitudes of places visited by Henry. The book lacks an index.

Portugal is not much in the news these days, but in the 15th century, under Prince Henry's leadership, she led the way in technological innovation: shipbuilding, navigation, and cartography made forward leaps. Seafaring had previously been limited to coastal sailing, since primitive navigation provided no answer to the question "where are we?". With Henry's guidance, a more reliable astrolabe was developed.
New designs replaced the galley, and the caravel became the ship used by such men as Magellan and Columbus; she sailed faster and closer to the wind and made long voyages feasible. Henry also encouraged exploration of the African coast, and Portugal hoped to do her part in ridding the Mediterranean of Moors.
This book is well-written and quite charming; if Carreiro had been writing history when I went to school, I would have been a much better student. In this era of deconstructive biography, it is refreshing to think that some people were altruistic and indeed rather chivalrous; Carreiro understands that we don't always need to know baser motives: who envied whom, whose princess was promiscuous.
Armchair sailors will enjoy the details of ship design development; from galley to bark, and from barinel to caravel; lateen rigging is, after all, what propels modern beachboats like the 'sunfish'.
I give this book 5 stars; it is highly recommended. (I received a free copy as a member of Dorrance's review team. Richard Merlo).

Having recently moved to Europe, I was intrigued not only by the title, but by the history within. In the United State's public school systems, rarely is European history taught. This book had my attention from the very first chapter. Clearly written, chronologically accurate, it reveals events happening and leading up to our own continental discovery (U.S.A.by Christopher Columbus); Prince Henry and Christopher Columbus are uniquely connected. Overall, I felt this was a good read and very interesting. I enjoy sea-stories and lucky for me, the salt water does run in our family veins as well (four generation navy family). Anyone wishing to hear old salt tales from the past, this would be the book to read. Truly a wonder. Enjoy.
