Our daughter has probably read this book hundreds of times. It's a very well written, accessible, kid-friendly book about slavery. The first time we bought it, we got it at Goodwill. Then the binding fell apart - after about 50 reads, but she kept on reading it, clipping the loose pages together! - so I decided to replace it. What a surprise to find it for 1 cent! Naturally, I bought it. She was overjoyed to have a fresh copy with all the pages attached to each other. She has read it another hundred times, and the binding has deteriorated again. If I could find it for a penny again, I'd buy it again, and again and again.

I read portions of this book aloud to several people and with no exceptions grownups and children alike, it touched their very souls. I found it in an elementary school library but just had to have a copy of my own after I read it. It is a quick read as well as a must read. It will change your entire life view about the importance of reading and writing and learning. I can't say enough about this book. Read it. You will immediately see what I mean.
Memuro
loved the story. Can't believe all the terrible things that happened to the slaves.

I had purchased this book, along with the Rush Revere series and several other books for my grand daughter to us as reading materials for my three great grandsons whom she is home schooling. The boys were very excited when the books arrived, and could barely wait to begin reading them. They have read all of the books that I had purchased and are looking for more.

I honestly believed I was purchasing a new book instead I got a used one. Although it was in good condition the binding was off, the part about the Author and the acknowledgement were at the back instead of the front.
Budar
This is a great read to understand all the things that people had to go through to protect their loved ones and experience “freedom”
