If homeless rates are higher among Black Londoners, this certainly isn’t reflected on the streets, where . I imagine that many of the homeless Black people in London are faced with a similar situation to the one I and my family were in. My home in Nigeria (Original photo by me).

If homeless rates are higher among Black Londoners, this certainly isn’t reflected on the streets, where personally, 99% of the homeless people I encounter are in fact White men. But understanding homelessness is also understanding that you don’t have to be living on the street to be homeless. The definition of homelessness means not having a home – even with a roof over your head you can still be without a home. My family and I left England for Nigeria in 2004.

Census data indicates that the minority ethnic population is about 2 per cent, but this is likely to be an underestimate.

Black and minority-ethnic communities are a growing and irrepressible force in Europe and ‘own’ special rights, responsibilities and relationships for successful black cultural production vis-a-vis inter-ethnic solidarity. The European Union is strong and vivacious in areas of political, cultural, social and economic development, it must however treat the inherent need for better race-relations in a more ‘specific, structured and systematic’ fashion.
