The Dark Is Rising is a series of five contemporary fantasy novels for older children and young adults that was written by the British author Susan Cooper and published 1965 to 1977. The Dark Is Rising, the second novel in the series, was published in 1973.

Susan Cooper is one of our foremost children’s authors; her classic five-book fantasy sequence The Dark Is Rising has sold millions of copies worldwide. Her many books have won the Newbery Medal, a Newbery Honor, and the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award, and been shortlisted five times for the Carnegie Medal. She combines fantasy with history in Victory (a Washington Post Top Ten for Children novel), King of Shadows and Ghost Hawk, and her magical The Boggart and the Monster, second in a trilogy, won the Scottish Arts Council’s Children’s Book Award.

This is an adaption of the second book in the series collectively entitled "The Dark is Rising"

This is an adaption of the second book in the series collectively entitled "The Dark is Rising". Dramatised by David Calcutt. Will - James Walmsley. Merriman - Ronald Pickup. With Struan Rodger, Geoffrey Banks, Carolyn Backhouse, Leo Conville, Hilary Attenborough, Susannah Tresilian, Richard Derrington, Susan Jeffrey, Mary Wimbush, Kathryn Hunt, Gerry Hinks and Tina Gray. Music by Martin Allcock. I'm not always a fan of people messing with Arthurian literature, but Susan Cooper has done an excellent job of keeping the sense of mystery and adventure with the unpredictability of the original texts. Thank you for sharing it with us. I'd love to hear the entire set some time.

Susan Cooper, in her five-title Dark Is Rising sequence, creates a world where the conflict between good and evil reaches epic proportions. Tolkien in her ability to deliver a moral vision in the context of breathtaking adventure. No one can stop at just one of her thrilling fantasy novels.

Susan Cooper's latest book is the YA novel "Ghost Hawk" (2013). Susan Cooper was born in 1935, and grew up in England's Buckinghamshire, an area that was green countryside then but has since become part of Greater London. As a child, she loved to read, as did her younger brother, who also became a writer.

Susan Cooper is a world-renowned author of children's books. Born and brought up in England, she worked as a journalist before moving to America, where she now lives. Her fabulous The Dark Is Rising sequence has won the Newbery Medal and was twice shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal. Her Boggart titles have won the Scottish Arts Council Children's Book Award and been shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal and the Smarties Prize. King of Shadows was also shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal.

Susan Cooper's haunting coming-of-age adventure is built around a very alarming variety of white Christmas. It feels particularly fitting to bring up what is easily my favourite seasonal story at a time when the country is shivering in the grip of the most bitter pre-Christmas weather we've seen in years. The Dark Is Rising – the second book in Susan Cooper's superbly menacing Arthurian quintet, in which the forces of the Dark and the Light are pitched against each other in a battle for humanity's soul – is steeped in, driven by cold

Cooper is a natural storyteller, and all five novels grip the reader tightly, helped in this with copious amounts of mythology and spectacular prose.

The Dark is Rising Sequence: Over Sea, Under Stone, The Dark Is Rising, Greenwitch, The Grey King, Silver on the Tree. Susan Cooper's The Dark is Rising sequence, written between 1965 and 1977, is an example of a modern fantasy classic in the vein of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, Lewis's Narnia Chronicles, Lloyd Alexander's Prydain Chronicles, and Rowling's Potter series. Cooper is a natural storyteller, and all five novels grip the reader tightly, helped in this with copious amounts of mythology and spectacular prose.

Three Parts: The Finding, The Learning, The Testing.

I'll skip any summary of this book or of the series; dozens of reviewers have done that quite well. I assume that you are familiar with these books, probably have read this volume, (likely more than once), but now wish to have the book available as an audio CD. Perhaps a long car trip is in the offing? Good for you.

I am happy to report that, at least for me, this audio version gets high marks across the board.

First, I can hear it and understand it. No mushy sound recording. No odd imbalance in volume that requires you to keep turning the volume up and then down. All of the spoken words are crisp and clear.

Second, there are no sound effects or such folderol.

Third, there is a single reader. This is not a play for voices and is not read by a number of different character actors.

Fourth, Alex Jennings is a marvelously effective reader. His approach is dynamic but not overly dramatic. He is never coy or arch, and does not ham up any of the big scenes. In the first chapters he can be a bit tentative in distinguishing among the major characters and is inclined to give short shrift to minor characters, but after that he settles into the various roles and adds a distinct and recognizable identity to each character.

Finally, the reading is very respectful. By that I mean the book is not read as though it were just some silly children's book. It is treated as the triumphant work that it is and this adds greatly to its weight and impact.

Please note that there are 7 discs. Runtime is a bit under nine hours.

Series is awesome, and should be read by anyone interested in the folklore of the British Isles region. The stories themselves earn 6 stars.

But this particular version is very disappointing and not worth more than one star. I thought this was a set of books, when in reality it is one single book, containing all of the stories back-to-back. I guess it's more lightweight and portable this way, but the books almost becomes unmanageable in its large size, especially for kids. Pages are rather grey as well, not bright, and appear to be from recycled paper product.

I'm all for recycling, but save it for newsprint or packaging... not for works of literature that are intended to be read before bedtime!

††† When I read The Dark Is Rising in 4th grade (it's a 9th grade book) IT WAS THE MOST EXCITING THING I HAD EVER EXPERIENCED. It's so full of beautiful expressions of the battle between good and evil. I think it made me aware of the battle, the two clear sides, even as an adult and like the hero in the story - gave me an unquenchable desire to overcome the darkness in the heart of mankind and in my own heart. Such is the powerful effect books have on children, if not adults. Is there a special child in your life? This and the C.S. Lewis series, The Lion Witch and the Wardrobe, will be important references in his or her spirit. So buy it :-)

I will dispense with any sort of summary of the story; dozens of reviewers have done that quite well. I assume that you are familiar with these books, probably have read this volume, (likely more than once), but now wish to have the book available as an audio CD. Please note that by "6 pages" the publisher actually means "6 discs". Runtime is a bit over seven hours.

Enjoy.

Back off Harry Potter! Here are the original muggles and their wizardry old Great Uncle Merry! Set out on an adventure that rivals any of Indiana Jones and Lara Croft! Choose a side- the dark or the light.

I had forgotten the excitement and fu of Susan Cooper's Dark Is Rising series! These stories transcend time, fitting into the world of today just as well as they did when first written. Before reading the modern stories of wizards and such, I recommend introducing your children to the world of the Drew children, their Great Uncle Merry and the Old Ones.

This has been, and always will be, one of my favorite novels. I read this for the first time when I was seven and I was immediately pulled into the world and characters. The Dark is Rising is actually even better than this novel, but this one is a great setup to the sequel. It has a 'Goonies' type feel to it as these children move to this new house that all sorts of secrets hidden within its walls. They find a treasure map and begin to hunt for what is marked in the map. It has some great clue hunting scenes and run-ins with 'darkness' that keeps the suspense going throughout the entire novel. I feel like this series should be read by every young kid because it instilled a sense of wonder in me. If you are a fan of the Book of Three, you'll like this series.

Excellent nearly forgotten series of books. If you saw the movie made about the second book, forget the movie. It was awful compared to the book. The characters are wonderful, the story line is gripping and Susan Cooper has created an amazing world of wonder! Predating Harry Potter by decades, this is the book series that everyone needs to read!
