The Dark Is Rising is a series of five contemporary fantasy novels for older children and young adults that was written by the British author Susan Cooper and published 1965 to 1977. The Dark Is Rising, the second novel in the series, was published in 1973.
Susan Cooper is one of our foremost children’s authors; her classic five-book fantasy sequence The Dark Is Rising has sold millions of copies worldwide. Her many books have won the Newbery Medal, a Newbery Honor, and the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award, and been shortlisted five times for the Carnegie Medal. She combines fantasy with history in Victory (a Washington Post Top Ten for Children novel), King of Shadows and Ghost Hawk, and her magical The Boggart and the Monster, second in a trilogy, won the Scottish Arts Council’s Children’s Book Award.

I'm not always a fan of people messing with Arthurian literature, but Susan Cooper has done an excellent job of keeping the sense of mystery and adventure with the unpredictability of the original texts. Thank you for sharing it with us. I'd love to hear the entire set some time.

Susan Cooper's latest book is the YA novel "Ghost Hawk" (2013). Susan Cooper was born in 1935, and grew up in England's Buckinghamshire, an area that was green countryside then but has since become part of Greater London. As a child, she loved to read, as did her younger brother, who also became a writer.
Susan Cooper is a world-renowned author of children's books. Born and brought up in England, she worked as a journalist before moving to America, where she now lives. Her fabulous The Dark Is Rising sequence has won the Newbery Medal and was twice shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal. Her Boggart titles have won the Scottish Arts Council Children's Book Award and been shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal and the Smarties Prize. King of Shadows was also shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal.
Susan Cooper's haunting coming-of-age adventure is built around a very alarming variety of white Christmas. It feels particularly fitting to bring up what is easily my favourite seasonal story at a time when the country is shivering in the grip of the most bitter pre-Christmas weather we've seen in years. The Dark Is Rising – the second book in Susan Cooper's superbly menacing Arthurian quintet, in which the forces of the Dark and the Light are pitched against each other in a battle for humanity's soul – is steeped in, driven by cold
Cooper is a natural storyteller, and all five novels grip the reader tightly, helped in this with copious amounts of mythology and spectacular prose.
The Dark is Rising Sequence: Over Sea, Under Stone, The Dark Is Rising, Greenwitch, The Grey King, Silver on the Tree. Susan Cooper's The Dark is Rising sequence, written between 1965 and 1977, is an example of a modern fantasy classic in the vein of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, Lewis's Narnia Chronicles, Lloyd Alexander's Prydain Chronicles, and Rowling's Potter series. Cooper is a natural storyteller, and all five novels grip the reader tightly, helped in this with copious amounts of mythology and spectacular prose.
