ONE DOES f-delusion and deceit. But as I stood with Julia’s arms around me on that cold December night, trying to avoid my parents’ worried eyes, I had no idea what lay before me; no real suspicion of how difficult the path ahead would prove to be. The worries of children never endure; their fleetingness is one of the compensations of childhood.

Heralded as one of the most electrifying international literary debuts in years, THE DROWNING PEOPLE introduces us to an extraordinary new voice from an exciting young author. One has to admit that 20 year old Richard Mason certainly took on a lot and in his defense, "The Drowning People," while not the "literary masterpiece" it was heralded to be, is still an impressive debut for someone so young. Perhaps one of the main flaws of the novel is that even though it is set in the 1990's, the dialogue and mannerisms are definitely nineteenth century and therefore, it's hard to fully get into the dialogue these people use.

However, the central plot is rather mesmerizing, and although the true villain of the piece is rather obvious, Mason takes his time in revealing the identity, and when it comes, it is more "tragic" than "surprising." I agree that the central characters are very unsympathetic, merely victims of their own lusts, desires, and inconsideration of other people they are supposedly close to. Ella takes Charles away from Sarah just to show you can; then James takes Ella away from Charles, and then enter gay Eric, whose love for James seems the most genuine in the book. Alas, Eric's fate is pretty obvious, and after his untimely departure, he is merely a skeletal shadow, obscured by James' continued obsession (not love) with the exasperating and ultimately demented Ella. James is rather self-pitying, and even though in the beginning we know he has murdered his wife, you have to wonder why he even stayed married to her for forty-five years.
A dark, brooding expose, a character study, it offers very little suspense or chills; it is a cozy, wordy foray into the triangle of love, written by an obviously talented young man.
If he can remember to give his readers a firm understanding not only of the characters, but of the times in which they live, he just may be a great writer.

To use an old cliche, "I could not put this book down." The characters intrigued me with their constantly changing emotions and relationships. I was most interested in Ella. At first she seems nervous and unstable. However, the reader soon learns that she is just haunted by her past and unable to live up to the expectations of her aristorcratic family. Then she finds James and she thinks her troubles are over. These two people start a love affair that is so profound it possesses their very being. The depth of this love went so far that Ella made James prove his devotion to her in a bizzare manner. This action is the catalyst to a mystery that will keep the reader hanging on until the very end of the book.I think Mr.Mason will go far with his novel writing if the rest of his books are anything like this one.

I started this book last night (thank God it was saturday!) around 9pmish and finished it at 4:30 this morning! WOW I loved it. I read it based on a friend's recommendation, I did not really see it as a 'thriller mystery' but as one reveiwer remarked, more in line with 'wuthering heights." What i found so incredible was the author's level of depth and insight on the importance of owning one's mistakes, and the equal importance of forgiveness, not on a religious level, but on a healing one. His insights from a 70 year old man, reflecting on his past and how the mistakes we make and how we react and respond to them make up the lives we live, was incredibly instructive about life. one reviewer compared this book to mary higgens clark, and sidney sheldon. Their books are formula cr** in my opinion, this book offered so much on so many levels beyond just a well constructed plot. I am an avid reader, and writer, and a professional person - and if found this book to be up there with the best i have read. I can hardly wait for what Richard Mason may come up with next. Thanks for a great read.

A suspenseful first novel from a young new voice, this book gripped me with the very first sentence. That Mason has an exceptional command of the English language is evident throughout the book. There are no glaring grammatical errors as are found so often in many of the more recent books I have read. I enjoyed the story but some of the musings and ramblings of James Ferrell became tedious after a time and I found myself skimming over some long passages describing his internal conflicts regarding right and wrong, love and hate, and good and evil. Still, the first person narrative was effective. It was an entertaining as well as thought-provoking story.

I don't know when I've enjoyed reading English as much as with this book. The use of language was wonderful. The story was great and kept me captivated. Although as we all know the identity of the murderer is known right away, I found myself wondering how it came to her ....although you know it has to, the linkage was wonderful. I have recommended this to all my friends who really relish a good read as well as a good mystery. This is not your ordinary printed novel, this is a treat for the brain. Do the English just learn to use words better than we Americans?

This is the second time I have read this book, spanned by 5 years. It is well written and a real page turner. I would expect to read it again someday.

Just finished this book. I found the plot so compelling that I grabbed the book during any free moment I had. I found the repeated and lengthy musings of the narrator tiresome at times, but willing to pay the price of reading those parts to get to more of the plot. Hope to hear from this author again.
The novel appears to be well versed, stylistically perfect work of immature and inexperienced promising author
