After working to change schools from within-testifying before Congress and addressing audiences around the world about how to make schools better places for children-John Holt founded Growing Without Schooling (GWS) magazine. GWS was published from 1977 to 2001 and is the first magazine devoted to homeschooling and self-directed education. Home schooling is becoming both more diverse and mainstream. PhotoAlto/Sigrid Olsson). Recent statistics indicate that . million children were home-schooled in the United States in 2007. Most children received a substantial part of their education within the home. In the late 19th century, states started passing compulsory attendance laws. Whereas at school level their colleagues were trained in teaching strategies for differentiation in the classroom, the group of teachers in this study wanted more than just another set of teaching tools. Inspired by Engeströms change laboratories (Sannino, 2010) the teachers worked together to, in their words, organise ‘casual moments with students’ to improve teacher-student and student-student understanding. Moreover, the process of expansive learning might have supported their individual agency (Engeström in Kadri & Roth, 2015).

School shootings remain rare, even after 2018, a year of historic carnage on K-12 campuses. Last school year, more than 1 million elementary-age children experienced a lockdown, and among that group, at least 220,000 were in kindergarten or prekindergarten, the Post analysis revealed. While most kids won’t suffer long-term consequences, experts who specialize in childhood trauma suspect that a meaningful percentage will.

Often those in school have a community consisting mainly of a peer group, of which the parent has little influence and even knowledge.
