Burro Bill And Me book. I really enjoyed this book in which Edna, a nurse from a Williamsburg family, relates 10 years of travel by burro with her ex-circus husband Bill during the 1930's.

Burro Bill And Me book. Their travels were "roughing it" to extreme, but they enjoyed a freedom and joy that can only be found where few men and fewer women have gone before. The characters they met are unmatched in courage, determination, and eccentricity, some dangerous, others rude, but most were exceedingly helpful and generous.

Raised as a well-to-do Virginia girl, Edna fell head-over-heels in love with a semi literate and restless young man whose dreams of adventure and freedom were as wide as the California sky. For ten years, she lived with her husband in the deserts of Death Valley, scratching out a living and traveling on foot with their pack of burros.

by Edna Calkins Price. Burro Bill and Me is a personal memoir of the author who gave up a life as a nurse to a millionaire, to travel Death Valley, Nevada and the Arizona Strip behind a burro. The characters she meets come to life in this book, from the old prospectors, Mormon farmers, thieves, and people who would give their last bite of food to a couple of complete strangers.

She was shy and sedate, from a family of teachers and scholars. But it was love at first sight... To her family in Virginia she wrote hazily about the migrant "stiff" she had married. Bill was an adventurer who had left home at 14 with a nameless longing in his heart. "I can't take a soft life," he told his bride. "It rots a man." So they started their quest for "freedom" in sun-scorched Death Valley. Bill was exulted. "Free as a bird," he exclaimed. "All we have to do is toss our worldly goods on the burros and in five minutes we are moving! Who else in the world has so little and still so much?" As they roamed the deserts of Arizona and California on foot, making friends with prospectors and desert rats. Edna found herself absorbed in her new life. Sometimes she wondered how, gently bred, she was content to live in the crudest manner, eating the barest subsistence diet, wandering afoot across deserts, plains and badlands, sleeping under the stars, hobnobbing with miners, Indians, herders and bindlestiffs. It was because she and Bill has found inner peace. "In this place," Bill explained, "a man can find his God." Ms. Price tells her story with gaiety and humor. With a twinkle in her eye she recalls the harsh experiences which were part of the happiest years of her life.

A wonderfully simple tail of a time long gone. A great read.

Excellent read, clear, concise and fascinating. I chose the book because it was recommended by a classmate and because I personally knew the author and I was not disappointed. Anyone interested in the southwest history of Las Vegas, Lake Mead, Los Angeles, and Death Valley in the 1930s at can't help but be captivated by the author's trek through history.

I bought this book in hopes of learning more about survival under the extremes of Death Valley. What I got was a collection of remembrances about the unusual characters that choose to live in the desert, and a very little about what was required in every day survival. It was entertaining and interesting. And it was remarkable that people would choose to live in such hostile conditions, but it wasn't really what I wanted. Decide what you want before you purchase.

Picked up this book almost by chance in the Death Valley Vistor Center at Furnace Creek and it is a total gem. Edna C. Price writes with great frankness and good humour of her travels with her husband Bill and their burros, in the 1930s. It has some wonderful character portraits and great anecdotes and through all of it their love and RESPECT for the country and the animals in it (as well as their burros) really shines through. Hard times but amazing tales and very well written (Mrs. Price came from an erudite and academic family and this is evident in her writing style - spare, but intelligently written). This book should be more widely available! A film would be fantastic.

Burro Bill and Me, a personal memoir, shows the West in the 1930s just as it was changing from an open territory to the settled land it is now. This very literate, funny, and insightful book is a joy to read. Ms Price gave up a life as a nurse to a millionaire to travel Death Valley, Nevada, and the Arizona Strip behind a burro. The characters she meets come to life in this book; from the old prospectors, Mormon farmers, thieves, and people who would give their last bite of food to a couple of strangers. While the book is difficult to find, it's worth whatever you pay for it.
Interesting book about a couple walking in the desert with burros in western U.S.. It tells about the problems they had an how they solved them with many different experiences. It might help if you have an interest in burros while reading this book.
