I absolutely LOVED this novel. Somewhere between a fairytale world and this one; it's not too restricted by the real world and isn't too far away to be able to relate. Reality is malleable in this world, so this isn't a great book for mindless reading. You'd get lost pretty quick. But the writing is excellent, the characters are vivid, and the plot is very original. I loved this book so much that I was going to ignore the next books on my "to read" list in favor of another work from Setiawan. I was very disappointed to learn this is his only currently published novel. I am impatiently waiting for the next release.

Recently I was walking through the my univeristy's library to find a source for a paper I had to write. On my way out the stacks, arms laden with reputable sources, I passed by the leisure reading shelves. I glanced at them as usual, but then I did something I do not usually do: I picked up one of the novels from the shelf and instantly fell in love with the cover and the title of Erick Setiawan’s first and only novel: Of Bees and Mist.

We follow the story of Meridia, a young girl who grows up in a house where there are ghosts in the mirrors, staircases change lengths, and three mysterious mists around the house. Meridia’s life is change quite radically when she falls in love with and then marries Daniel, moving in with his family.

But this new house has a mysterious, unmarked grave in the front yard, Daniel’s younger sisters who have been raised to loathe each other, and Eva, Daniel’s mother, and her army of pseudo-magical bees used to force others to do her bidding.

This is a tale of magic, but it is far more than that. It is, first and foremost, a tale of the human condition whose underlying currents are highlighted and exaggerated by Setiawan’s superb use of magical realism. I was—and am—quite shocked at how much I enjoyed this novel: I typically prefer tales where magic is treated in the same vein as science: exacting in its practice and explained in every detail. However, Setiawan’s magic seems to have no hard and fast rules governing it; instead, the magical aspects of Of Bees and Mist are absolutely perfect for what they need to do, when they need to do them.

I wholeheartedly recommend Of Bees and Mist to anyone interested in a magically realist novel with fairy-tale-like qualities. And I know that I will be reading Setiawan’s next novel with high hopes that it can live up to the promise of this one.

Meridia grows up in a cold house, both physically and emotionally. Her mother is almost always in the kitchen, while her father toils away in his study. If he has anything to say to her, it is generally unkind. He disappears each night in a mist and returns in another mist. She dreams of a dreadful flash that split her parents and see a ghastly specter in the mirror. A nanny tells her of how great her parents' love once was and the mysterious circumstances that drew them apart. Once she is off to school she has no friends until the Hannah appears at school. She gets Meridia to explore before she moves away as quickly as she appears. When Meridia runs into Daniel at the fair, she is strongly drawn to him and they fall in love. While her father is against the marriage, she moves forward with it, hoping for a more normal life. She finds, however, that her mother-in-law, Eva, is not what she seems to be and now has another set of magical forces to contend with. As she struggles to make a life with Daniel, she is in clandestine war with Eva and must do everything she can for her family, old and new. I found this to be a wonderfully creative tale that drew me in with sparks of magic everywhere.

This is a pretty entertaining read, filled with great imagery. I was hooked for the first 100 or so pages, but then my interest waned somewhat as the author's use of magical realism, as well as the plot and the character development, became more and more unwieldy toward the end. I got the feeling that the author spent far more time crafting the beginning of the story than the climax and resolution. The final quarter of the book felt especially rushed and improvised to me.

But, it's a good story in a neat setting, and, overall, I enjoyed it. It makes for a good book club selection.

I couldn't wait to read this book. To start, it is very well written and keeps you turning the page. With that being said, I ask, why such turmoil all the time. It affected my mood the entire time I was reading it. This is not a book for the person who is an eternal optimist. There is always strife and the happy moments never last more than a page. Because the author wrote the book so well, I will pass it on, but with tht will come the warning of "it may depress you"

One of the better books I've read in a long time. Mr. Setiawan takes you to a place where the magic wraps you tightly into its powers. The tragic story of Meridia's life, the loss of one love, her find of another, coming into her own power against all odds is wonderful. Magic abounds in this story but you never actually see it "worked" it just "is". The fact that the story never lets on exactly where you are, America, Japan or any other place in the world leaves you free to imagine your own cultural surroundings, mine seemed to be of a "Steampunk" kind of a reality, modern yet antiquated at the same time, an overall Victorian era feel, yet it rang of ancient Asian fables I remember from my childhood. I highly recommend this book simply because it is a wonderful, fresh story. There is no action to grip your seat over, no suspense to keep you propelled, it is a fable of good-vs-evil, a struggle of power between two families and most of all it is a story of love put to the test by what seems to be insurmountable hurdles, but love triumphs ultimately and the evil is tamed. Get this book you won't be sorry.

Like many of the other reviewers, this book took me a bit to get into. What was the point of it? Where was the author going? Yet I never put it down for long. Before long, I couldn't put it down at all. The relationships were addicting, the characters compelling and human, and the magic somehow seemed real. And the ending brings it all together. I highly recommend it.
