Cave of the Heart is a one-act ballet choreographed by Martha Graham to music by Samuel Barber. It was first performed on May 10, 1946, with the title Serpent Heart, at the second annual Festival of Contemporary American Music in the McMillin Theater of Columbia University. Serpent Heart was commissioned by the festival sponsor, The Alice M. Ditson Fund. The piece is loosely based on the Medea myth. The choreography is rich in Jungian symbolism, an important influence on Graham.

Revealed through the eyes of one of Gangaji's pupils, expressing the inexpressible, Courtney's account of her connection with her teacher is deeply compelling. Her questions, doubts and insights are relevant to any serious seeker.

What is most valuable about this book is the opportunity it provides to directly experience resting in the cave of the heart. The transmission is so palpable and so supporting. A must read. I highly recommend it.

Anne Courtney's "Resting In The Cave Of The Heart" is a beautiful book. The wisdom and peace that emanates from this story of no story is of service to all who read it. It is a generous book, in that, while much of Anne's personal experience is revealed, she has written in a way that offers the reader a lot of space to have their own experience. There is a maturity and clarity in Anne's writing that I really appreciate.
