The War Against the Chtorr is a series of science fiction novels by American writer David Gerrold.

The War Against the Chtorr is a series of science fiction novels by American writer David Gerrold. The Chtorr series was originally planned as a trilogy, but as the story became more intricate, Gerrold realized that three books would not be enough for him to tell the entire story. For a time, he was uncertain how many books there would be in the end but plans on seven. As of 2018, four books have been completed

The War Against the Chtorr 1: A Matter For Men. ISBN. 0553277820 (ISBN13: 9780553277821). A Matter for Men is the uneven but often brilliant first book of David Gerrold’s notoriously unfinished War Against the Chtorr series from the 1980s, and it is a pretty spectacular read. The series was recommended (and gifted) to me by a close friend, and I’m happy he urged me to read it. The main plot focuses on the invasion of earth by elements of what appears to be an alien ecosystem belonging to the Chtorr: giant fuzzy caterpillars from outer space.

Chtorr (ktor) n. 1. The planet Chtorr, presumed to exist within 30 light-years of Earth Just before each man reached the top he sprawled flat against the slope, then inched slowly forward

Chtorr (ktor) n. The planet Chtorr, presumed to exist within 30 light-years of Earth. 2. The star system in which the planet occurs; a red giant star, presently unidentified. 3. The ruling species of the planet Chtorr; generic. 4. In formal usage, either one or many members of same; a Chtorr, the Chtorr. See Chtor-ran) 5. The glottal chirruping cry of a Chtorr. Just before each man reached the top he sprawled flat against the slope, then inched slowly forward. Duke was in the lead, wriggling through the tall weeds like a snake. We'd topped five hills this way today and the heat was getting to me. I thought about ice water and the jeep we'd left back on the road.

When i started this book i realized i had stumbled onto something GREAT, better then great even. I had never heard of David Gerrold at the time. when i finished i read the other three books and then realized there was no book five

Rule Two: Never explain your work. Especially don't explain it, before. I am now going to break Rule Two. Flagrantly. This particular episode of The War Against The Chtorr includes a number of chapters of heavily didactic material.

The Earth has been invaded by aliens, but the invasion is not with soldier and star ships. It starts with plagues that ravage the human race, killing off a high percentage of the population. Then as people are struggling to recover they begin to discover alien plants and animals being introduced. The creatures/plants are hyper aggressive and represent the first steps of another species terraforming the earth. The US lost the cold war and was forced to disarm (think Germany post WW1). They recognize the threat, but the world feels they are just using this as an excuse to rearm.

So that is the premise, and it's pretty intriguing, the problem I have is the main character (book is in first person). The main character is completely unlikable. He comes off as angry, arrogant, and self righteous, and all around bad combination. The other characters he encounters are basically cardboard cutouts, sure they have names, but they paper thin and just something new for the protagonist to rail against.

Ultimately I found the book disappointing. There were some really cool ideas that I would have liked to seen explored further, but I won't continue with the series. For a first person novel, it's really hard to continue if you don't like the person telling the story

I started the series this summer & I'm all caught up. I had first heard of the work from a GURPS game of the same name which I never bought but read the back page description. It seemed very interesting so I ordered a used copy of the book here on Amazon but shelved the book for almost a year before I got around to reading it!

All I can say is that Gerrold writes with an addictive, straight forward prose & I spent the entire summer going through all four novels & eagerly await the remaining volumes. His characters are offbeat & there is plenty of humor to go around in this nightmare world that he conjured up. What's really strange is that I can always see these odd parallels with our own ecology here in the real world when compared with the chtorrans. For example, like looking at the Hip Hop culture as some strange sub-ecology & trying to figure out what its motive is & why it functions the way it does as if it were its own entity. Or looking at our rapidly over-populating world & trying to determine what its next stage will be in terms of evolutionary process that may just be a fluke in its direction or some sort of design already determined for some higher purpose as the chtorrans are hinted at.

The books themselves deal with a lot of evolutionary theory & you can tell that it gets quite complex as you move through them which as I can see from reading Gerrold's website is understandably involving & making the remaining part of his opus still residing in the woodshed...being brushed clean with a fine toothed comb I would wager. "Intelligent Design" theorists should probably not read this book unless they want to cross-over to the Darwinian "dark side". Gerrold spends a great deal of time explaining the process of one ecology consuming another & I really looked forward to reading these parts as they had great shock value & the story keeps moving forward very reliably. You can also see some foreshadowing as such where it might not come back for a book or two distance from where you read it, but you can tell that something might happen with it in the future so it's always nice to make mental footnotes.

I eagerly await the rest of the follow-up books & will likely read his other books in the meanwhile to get caught up on all things Gerrold!

I had asked my parents for a book for christmas one year (what that book was i don't even remember now) what i got was the second book in this series. Ooops. I hurried out the next day (the day the crowds return their unwanted presents) and bought the book, A Matter for Men.

When i started this book i realized i had stumbled onto something GREAT, better then great even. I had never heard of David Gerrold at the time. when i finished i read the other three books and then realized there was no book five.

I am waiting and waiting and will wait. I feel it is the reason God is keeping me alive so i can finish the war of the Chrtor series. if you want to read real Si/Fi this is it. you have stumbled on the best series never finished. you will not be disapointed, i promise

This is very hard sci-fi. Do not pick up ths book without having many hours available to you to finish it. Once started, the book sucks you in gradually so that you say, "just one more chapter". When you finish the book at 5:50 am the next morning, you will be exhausted as if you had just run a 10K.

The above also applies to the three follow-on books.

I have read this book at least 5 times. Maybe 8. I lost count many years ago.

Gerrold's site, [...] , claims that there will be a fifth book and a sixth book and a seventh book. I will believe it when I see it. I suspect that these books are so strenuous to write that the man might not have the strength to finish them anymore. There is a taunting preview of book 5 at [...] .
