Henri Julien Félix Rousseau (French: ; 21 May 1844 – 2 September 1910) was a French post-impressionist painter in the Naïve or Primitive manner. He was also known as Le Douanier (the customs officer), a humorous description of his occupation as a toll and tax collector. He started painting seriously in his early forties; by age 49, he retired from his job to work on his art full-time.
Henri Rousseau fits tightly in the history of art. He put Naive art into a necessary and an important category. There is no one like him and there was no one in Paris who was doing what he was doing in his time during the 1800's. I love looking at the amazing prints in this book by the primitivist Rousseau. Look at the cover of this, this tiger in the grass. Rousseau was a Parisian in the last part of the 1800's who never left Paris (in spite of telling friends he had visited Mexico. New animals never before seen such as gorillas and tigers and leopards were coming to the Paris zoo. New exotic plants were coming to the huge Parisian greenhouses.
Henri-Julien Félix Rousseau, dit Le Douanier. Born in Laval, in the west of France, Henri Rousseau (1844-1910) joined the army and then worked as a tax collector in the Paris Excise Office, hence his nickname of Douanier (customs officer). He began to paint in his free time, and from 1885 became a regular exhibitor at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris where painters like Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) and Odilon Redon (1840-1916) marvelled at the originality of his vision.
