by Eloise Greenfield. illustrated by James Calvin. Genny is confident that Larry will say exactly the right thing to make the family happy and loving again - the way they used to b. ut when Larry's return doesn't produce the miracle she had counted on, Genny is angry. It takes a sympathetic friend to help her understand that change isn't necessarily bad - and that families can still love each other, no matter what happens.

Eloise Greenfield (born May 17, 1929) is an American children's book and biography author and poet famous for her descriptive, rhythmic style and positive portrayal of the African-American experience. After college, Greenfield began writing poetry and songs in the 1950s while working in a civil service job. Since 1971, she has published more than 40 children's books, including picture books, novels, poetry and biographies.

Greenfield's portrayal of Genny's feelings, her family's interactions, and her conversations with an old neighbor is sensitive enough to make this one of the more honest and effective entries in its limited, problem/consolation genre. It looks like Genny's family will be complete again when her older brother Larry comes home from the army, and she arranges a surprise party in a neighbor's yard to celebrate the return. The party is a success, but the family is already breaking up; next morning the parents announce that Daddy will be moving out.

Had to purchase this book for a school project which none of the schools or libraries carries this book. As for a 11 yr reading this book was painful. She is a reader and loves to read. She is always buried in a book. She said this book was plain awful. The writing was horrible and could not keep her interest. Would not recommend reading if you have too!! LOL

"Talk About a Family" is a book you may like. I loved it, and you probably will, too. One reason I loved it is because it is not a fantasy book, although I do kind of like fantasy books. This book is actually a realistic fiction book. It teaches us that even though something sad can happen, something good WILL happen to make everything better. Here is a passage from the book. "Mr. James was hitting the table softly with his fist, and Genny remembered another time. The time when he had been in bed with a bad pain in his back. Genny could still see the way his fist had looked hitting the blanket over and over in that same soft way.

Somethng terrible was going to happen. There was only quiet at the table, and trouble." I picked this because it shows something sad will hapen. Now you should read the book and find out what did happen. I would recommend this book to anyone who has family problems or anyone who enjoys reading. Eloise Greenfield did a great job with her writing. This book is great!

In the book, Talk About a Family, by Eloise Greenfeild young Genny's parents are fighting again. Her brother,Larry, comes to vist. The family throws Larry a surprise party. Meanwhile the family's problems just get worse. Genny hopes Larry will work his magoc and fix the family's problems. I think this family book has a lot of feeling, sensitivity, and realistic features. I gave this story four stars and recommend it for ages 7-10. I would prefer this story to have a different ending and more action, however I loved the characters and use of words. This novel also has detailed illustrations. This book isn't perfect, but it's pretty good. I enjoyed the way it was simple and entertaining, I think other children would agree.

Talk About a Family is a realistic fiction book. It is not like most of the books I have read. I didn't like the book because it is too realistic. It is also too dramatic and sad in my opinion. Although I didn't enjoy the book,I did like the illustrations, because they were very reaistic and showed a lot about the scenes. I also liked how the author wrote the book. She put in many details, but the book was still easy to understand. The ending surprised me because Genny [the main character] finally accepted and understood why her family was having problems. I was also relieved because everything was falling into place. I would recommend the book if you like a realistic fiction.

I thought Talk About a Family, by Eloise Greenfield was a fair book. I liked the novel in some ways and didn't like the novel in other ways. I liked the author's writing style. Eloise used interesting comparisons. What I didn't like was the characters behavior. Genny got angry because her brother, Larry, couldn't fix the family's situation. I also didn't like that Kim wrote all those ugly signs over the house. That made the family situation worse, and it might have hurt someone's feelings. I recommend this book to a high third grade reader or a fourth grade reader. I don't recommend this book for someone who likes adventure and action. There was no action in the book at all.

Although I enjoyed the book, Talk About a Family, by Eloise Greenfield, I only gave it three stars, because I disliked the ending. I liked the book because it is realistic fiction, and therefore it is easy to relate to. I also liked the book because the author explains things clearly in her writing so it is easy for you to understand. I disliked the ending, because I expected more; it just leaves you hanging with Genny's parents splitting apart. I would recommend this book to 3rd and 4th graders, because they could probably understand it better than younger children. Although, all of the fighting and unhappiness is probably not going to be that appealing to them.

I gave Talk About a Family three stars, because over all it was a good book even though it was not my type. One thing I liked was how it used real life family events. The book showed that even something that makes you sad could teach you something. There was a main event that had many small details with some problems that were solved in a positive way. The author compared changing families to changing shapes. I did not like how the story started, because it did not give enough background. It was not my favorite book, but it was well written and I would recommend it to kids in third and fourth grades, or children whose parents are in a difficult realationship.
Talk About a Family by Eliose Greenfeild was a good book, but not one of my favorites because it was too sad. When Genny's parents split up she feels really upset. When the characters are sad it makes me feel sad. I also didn't like this book because there was no action. Action makes the reader want to read the book and keeps them interested. The only reason I liked this book, was because the characters and the book were so realistic. I would recommend this book to third and fourth graders who like realistic stories. I would not recommend this book to a person who is going through the same family situation as Genny, because it might make them feel upset.
