Subtly woven into the plot is another, darker threat, providing the surprise ending that is itself an act of violence on the reader's imagination (Daily Express).

But the casual murder of a man trying to prevent an act of vandalism shatters the genteel appearance. Parents are forced to consider whether their children could be involved, friends avoid each other's eyes, and partners word their conversations carefully. Somebody in the community is close to the murderer - someone with a past that threatens to resurface, bringing damage and devastation to a whole community.

Beginning with the tense US victory in the 1993 Ryder Cup, this book tells the story of an unusually turbulent year on the PGA tour.

By (author) Margaret Yorke. Her books have a quiet fatalism, rather than the terrible menace of Highsmith's stories, but are almost as frightening Guardian There is not a word wasted in Margaret Yorke's deftly constructed crime novels, yet they have a hinterland greater than many novels twice the length. Margaret Yorke was awarded the 1999 Cartier Diamond Dagger for her outstanding contribution to the crime fiction genre. She was a past chairman of the Crime Writers' Association and the author of over 50 novels. She died in November 2012.

Again, Yorke is excellent in giving us a story of an average family, impacted by a horrible crime, and the fallout which is anything but what you would expect. A father is home with his teenaged daughter when a burglar breaks in and rapes her. The father is tied up, the burglar has a gun, so he begs his daughter not to resist. Still, she fights hard, despite his warnings. When it is done, she can never forgive him, and neither does the wife who was not home at the time, and the family breaks up. The father cannot forgive himself until he avenges the crime and gets his family back. But can a low-key, mild-mannered, accountant used to playing by the rules go outside the law and take care of business? The story is compelling: should he have died trying, or was it best to expect her to recover from the rape? Great suspense, compelling drama, and all wrapped up in a story barely more than 200 pages. I loved it!

No-one can top Margaret Yorke!!
Exellent
Margaret Yorke shows us that every human heart has its grey area and finds the literary spark in even lacklustre personalities. She is truly a master of the cozy English mystery, but lets in the cold sensible air of modern life to an amazing degree. You'll find you don't want to put her little paperbacks down until she is finished with you.

Act of Violence seems to go on and on and on but not much ever happens. Granted, the first 25 pages captures the readers attention, eagerly awaiting developments in a potentially exciting plot. Then the story takes an abrupt turn into another story line which never connects very well with the first 25 pages. The end of the book is unsatisfying because we really don't know what happens to the characters we've been following. Does Oliver fall for Midge? Do Sarah and Oliver re-cememt their marriage? Does Kevin go to prison? Does Oliver leave his law practice to repair doll houses? And on and on. A disappointing read.

Rape is such an ugly topic to talk about but this author, Margaret Yorke did such a wonderful job of exposing some of the unfortunate side effects from such an injury.
After I read the book Paradise Wild by Johanna Lindsey, I read this book. Each speaks about a character who is raped. Please read my review on Paradise Wild. This book treats rape the right way.
